Why should I say my name when the teacher is reading and calling up the class and seeing that I sit there, if he sees my why should I say my name?

Is it some kind of disciplinary ritual or a showing of contact to the peers and or teacher...

It's called riding the clock, why anyone would need to take attendance for months on end is amazing, no explination for it but wasting time.

Do you mean, she's staring at you and you still have to say, "Here?" If so, I can't tell you. It's a NT rule. If everyone HAS to answer, so do you, even though she knows you're there. Just do it. I've always found that sort of amusing

If you'd ever been the one taking roll, you'd understand why. It's more efficient that way to have everyone say "here" etc. then searching the classroom for every name on the list.

Stand there exhausted at 8 in the morning, staring at a sheet of paper filled with names, marking names that are absent with a little checkmark. You have neither the time nor energy to silently search a classroom of any real size for every last person on the list... and that's assuming you know everyone's name and can match the names with the faces, so you know who exactly you're looking at. You might not.
