AS/Autism considered a myth in other countries?
In Bulgaria, mild behavioural disorders are usually considered to be "whims", and the best cure for them is a slap on the face and a "Pull yourself together!" or a "Grow up already!"
"You are autistic? Well, switch it off and start acting normal right now!"
That's right - autism is nothing more than a bad habit. And if a child doesn't willingly stop being autistic, then he is "spoiled" and should be beaten more often (corporal punishment is the most common treatment for any child problem).
And if a kid is proven to be autistic, he will inevitably be shunned. Other parents will generally not allow their own kids to be anywhere near the "sick" one (cause they could get infected or something). I have actually heard parents telling their children to stay away from the autistic kid because he could be "aggressive" and "attack without provocation." The children were also advised to run away if they see that the autist has foam at the mouth. As if he is a rabid dog
It is disgusting, I know. This is the kind of place I have to live in - and that is why I make so much effort to hide my condition. Living in a lie is preferable to the alternative...

Eastern Europe, really. You're probably like the guy my husband told me about--it's not right that they try to shame you and blame it on laziness. He's starting to understand, though, because he sees personally how hard it is for me. We may move to Eastern Europe for some time because I do love his family despite the fake religion and silly superstitions pervading the culture... but I'll need to find some real people who don't just follow tradition to make other people happy who are also just following traditions to make other people happy... very circular reasoning, really.
