I don't mind fairgrounds. I usually go down to one near the sea, with my family on bonfire night in November. But I always feel sick on rides. If I eat too soon before going on rides, I feel my food doesn't go down, and it makes me feel a bit sick. If I eat way after going on rides, I still feel sick because I'm not hungry. I don't like eating in the car, and my family always wants to eat straight away when we arrive. So I usually just buy a bottle of water, so I can sip if I start to feel sick.

but what if that theme park or fair had a garlic festival? could you turn down garlic?! i am going to the chehalis garlic festival this friday [before my weekend aspie meetup in seattle] because i want to experience all that a garlic festival entails. garlic burgers. garlic fries. garlic pizza. chicken marinated in rosemary and garlic. deep-fried garlic cloves. french fries drizzled in garlic butter. french fries with garlic and parmesan cheese. garlic gorgonzola french fries. onion rings with garlic. pot roast gorgonzola sandwiches with garlic. shrimp, scallops and garlic crepe. veggie stir fry with garlic. yum Image i can't wait! :bounce:
(clicky)Chehalis Garlic Festival!
p.s.- if you meet me in oly, i will DRIVE you to it!

Sigh. I live in Alabama, but I'd rather live up there. I'd drive 3000 miles for all that garlic in a heartbeat, but my family would want to tag along.

as far as fairs/theme parks go, I'm scared of most of the rides because I don't like going upside down or too fast, but I like the lights. I love Ferris wheels--the higher the better. The smells are a little rancid for me and it can be too noisy.

I've never been to a theme park, just state fairs.

When I was 15, I got drunk on beer, ate 2 hot dogs, rode the Super Himalaya and threw up in the Hall of Mirrors.

I'm basically the same as you. I love theme parks. I love rides and eating the food. I hate the crowds though, especially when it's really hot.

I am not particularly fond of fairs or amusement parks. The crowds, greasy food, annoying merchants (not all of them were, but there were some that would follow you, telling you how much you really need their products) and ridiculously overpriced food makes it completely undesirable in my opinion. In reference to amusement parks, take all the aforementioned nuisances and add the possibility of the rides malfunctioning either by mechanical or operator error.

I don't like them. Rollercoasters and any ride which involves being high in the air or upside down terrify me. On top of that I don't like the crowds or the noise.

Also this. I would probably be scarred for life if I ended up stuck upside down in a rollercoaster or something. Even thinking of it is making me feel nauseous.

There's nothing I love more than the sights, sounds, and thrills of amusement parks. The pretty lights, the arcade sounds, the sound of roller coasters' chain lifts... It's magnificent. If I could live at Cedar Point, I would. It is where I am happiest. :bounce:

I can only handle Disneyland once a year at the most, as while I like some of the rides, I don't get the obsession over it that some NT's have, where it's the equivalent of an autistic special interest. Other theme parks I do enjoy, although I'm also fine with going there once a year as well, as the food is overpriced, and I hate that you can't bring in your own water bottles.

I do very much, but with reservations --
-- I prefer to go on days or at times when it's not crowded. I can't stand all the pushing and rudeness.
-- I don't do rides much any more. I get sick on many of them -- mainly the ones that go in circles -- but as I get older, I get sick even on stuff like ferris wheels.
-- And I don't play the games. They're ripoffs, and the carnies are far too flirty, and in a creepy, smelly, toothless way.

And of course any where with clowns is going to weird me out a little, so circuses are more of an issue. Not actually "scared" of clowns in the traditional sense, but I think they're creepy, and I avoid them when I can.

What I really do love though are cultural/art festivals and county/state fairs. There's usually good food, interesting displays and events, and good shopping. I love to go look at the animals at the fairs -- pigs, goats, rabbits. I even like the cattle -- cows have always been very relaxing to me. As sensitive as I am to smells, you'd think I'd stay far away from such things, but oddly enough the feed, hay and manure smells don't put me off that much.

My favorites right now are Scottish festivals and Bluegrass festivals, which means in both cases really cool music, and in the case of the Scottish Festivals, hot burly guys in kilts... :D

i was Goofy.

i've never done well in crowds. i prefer the parks on off days when i don't have to stand in long lines or deal with lots of people crowding me in. also preferably in the winter.

i've always been anxious in crowds and not really understood why it didn't bother me when i was a character at disney world. my diagnosis earlier this year confirmed my reasons for not liking crowds, but i never understood how i was able to overcome that hurdle dressed as goofy or captain hook with tons of people around me. i was a character back in the early 90s at the magic kingdom. they didn't have lines for people to see characters back then. you simply walked out from one of the backstage doors while someone observed to make sure you were not being harmed. as soon as i would walk out, i would be crushed by tons of kids and people wanting autographs and such. i was calm, animated, and had no problem with it except for the horrible heat.

i stumbled across this (http://www.wired.com/playbook/2012/07/ff_mascots/all/) article in last month's issue of wired that discusses these types of costumes and autism. turns out that it might have been this job that helped me overcome some of my social phobias. still not a big fan of social situations or crowds, but far better than i was as a child.

as far as fairs/carnivals.... screw that! i'm not getting on a ride that was build in a few hours by people with questionable engineering skills. i'm also not playing a game that is undeniably skewed against the player. same reason i don't gamble in vegas. i do like the iowa state fair, but no rides. i just walk around with my wife and look at the animals and such.

I like the rides at theme parks but I won't ride travelling funfair rides.

Theme parks in the UK aren't usually very crowded except on bank holidays and such. Funfairs are usually crowded and noisy, but the food is tasty.

That said, I live in a European city, so my concept of 'crowded' may be different to someone who comes from the US.

Love them. The faster and more thrilling the rides, the better...though I'm less tolerant of these rides than when I was a kid. Am also a big fan of waterslides.

My diagnoses - social anxiety disorder and obsessive-compulsive disorder.

I’m no longer involved with the ASD world.

I have an interest in old wooden rollercoasters, too.

Hmmm....well, I liked Six Flags at Kentucky Kingdom both times that I went with my niece and nephew...It was sort of crowded, but I was having so much fun that it must not have bothered me as much as it normally would have.

I also enjoyed going to the state fair when I was younger (I loved seeing all the animals) and I loved Camp Snoopy in the Mall of America (before it got replaced with Nickelodeon stuff).

I really, really, really want to go to Disneyland at some point...I would always ask my parents if we could all go when I was a kid, but they always said no. Now that Carsland has opened at their California Park, I want to go there more than ever. :D
