Hang in there. SSRI's take a little while to kick in with the positive benefits. 2-4 weeks or thereabouts. For the first two weeks you should be primarily looking out for side effects. If the side effects are mild and manageable, your doctor may slowly increase your dosage.

I have taken a few different types of anti-depressants. Some gave me nasty side effects, some did not. Some worked and some did not. When you find one that works for you, they can help considerably with depression and usually a bit with anxiety too. The goal is to feel more stable, decrease the frequency and severity of periods of depression, regain your interest in things that you were once interested in but lost it during depression periods.

Red wine has many beneficial qualities, and mimics a MDMA molecule, like housewives getting on the minor E after a couple of wines...probably live longer too

Took SSRI => Made me feel like I was drunk 24/7, couldn't even focus on work.
Took Wellbutrin => A-ok! ;)

I took SSRIs for 7 years to help with panic attacks and depression. For the first month of taking them I always found my panic attacks got much much worse and my stomach was very upset, then after that things got better for a while. I'd still have panic attacks though, just less intense ones.
I viewed SSRIs like a sticking plaster. They don't take away the problem, only mask the symptoms. If you can find someone to talk to about the thing(s) causing the depression, that'll help a lot, I think.
I've had a bad withdrawal despite tapering off them.

I experienced dizziness when waking during the first two weeks of taking Cymbalta. I felt better taking them, while depressed I hadn't been able to enjoy things I usually did, however withing the first few days I was eager to delve back into my interests. I regret not requesting them sooner.

I was on citalopram for almost three years and it definitely worked for me - it didn't make me happy per se, but helped me feel less awful than I did before taking it. It's worth giving it a go for a few months - you can always try something else if it doesn't work.
