I do notice small noises that others don't, but I actually like humming sounds, especially when I'm going to sleep. They calm me. I love hearing heaters, dishwashers, and washing machines. However, I hate flourescent lights for the actual light. I'm very, very picky about lights. There are only certain intensities that I can stand. I tend to choose little lamps that have nice, soft light that can be dispersed across the room.

what gets me is why people CAN'T hear those evil lights!
i hate them!

i would rather hear an air conditioner cycle every 5 minutes while sitting next ot it.

i can here a quarter spinning and get weird looks when some one does it behind me and i turn around agravated and say stop making that noise.

I can't be in a room with fluorescent lights but it's not so much the sound although I hear it, it's the electricity. It's the same with computers and cell phones. I've quit jobs and left courses because of it. Some offices I can handle as long as I don't have to spend a lot of time there but some people's phones I feel immediately (say on a bus or a train, and I'm on edge waiting for them to get off). And a roomful of computers is impossible.

Fluorescent lights are bad. The thing is they're bad for everyone, only some people don't notice. I always think of being sensitive as having more and better access to information than other people do.

Yes, I'm good at cheering myself up. 8)

I always have some sort of background noise wherever I go to help mask sounds that would otherwise bother me. My room has a box fan, an air conditioner, and an air purifier on at all times.

As a child, I was constantly bothered by the sound the lights and the computers in my school used to give off. I still hear an annoying whine whenever I'm around a computer. My ears have always been particularly sensitive though, and I particularly hate to have them touched too.

Once I did really bad on a test, because of a problem like this.
The teacher was making the class take the tests in the cafeteria, because we were a big class, it is was too easy to cheat, in our crowed classroom.
The machines that dispense soda made this annoying humming noise, and I could not concentrate, plus they keep going on and off.

Now I take take tests in the guidance consolers office, so that I am not distracted.

Aging fluorescent light annoy me... fortunately, the ones where I work are well maintained. I don't mind flashing lights, but I will hunt down and destroy flickering ones!

What bugs the hell out of me is analog clocks... I can't go to sleep if I hear ticking. Part of my ritual when I'm staying away from home is to make sure there's no (functioning) analog clocks in the bedroom.

Yeah, TVs make this loud high pitched noise that only I can hear. One time a moniter had broken in a computer lab and I could hear the noise it made outside.

Am I the only one who isn't bothered by fluorescent lights and can't hear them at all?

Am I the only one who doesn't see them blink?

another reason why I think I might have been misdiagnosed. But the sensory issues isn't in the criteria for a diagnoses.

I could be borderline aspie.

I'm real sensitive to fluorescent lights. The old ones make some strange noices from hums, buzzes to the occasional hissing light. But I have also heard incadescent bulbs sometimes make noise. Fluorescent lights or computer screens flickering will sometimes give me a migraine. Anyone have problems with the lighting in Target? They must have a conspiracy against autistics. I've had several moms of autie kids say the kids have seizures in Target. I feel like I am going to have a nervous breakdown every time I go in Target. Heck maybe its just all the red but I act like a nervous animal in there and have resorted to shouting several times.

I can't stand noise while I sleep except for my kitty's purring which makes me sleepy. The aquarium filter trickling drives me crazy at night if I don't wear earplugs. Also can't stand the sound of fans running while I sleep nor those white noise sleep machine things. I also hear some tvs and radios hum and I am considered hard of hearing! But there's only certain frequencies I can't hear. I'm very sensitive to vibrations too.
