Yes
And I get confused when people change their avatar (except a few people, who stick to the same general theme)

I tried to choose one that would be pretty easy to remember and sticks out pretty good. I think that having plenty of contrast helps quite a bit. The ones I notice the least are those that don't really stick out much.

This is the best way I would put it, I think.

This exactly:

Sometimes I even visualize them as their avatar - so if it is a cat, then I imagine you look like a cat in reality :)

In my mind, the avatar is the poster.

I imagine my catatar talking and moving its mouth like in the meow mix commercials when I write posts.

I get confused when someone else changes their avatar.

I prefer posters with catatars.

I also like diagram kind avatars. Landscapes are OK. Hoooman avatars not so appealing to me.

Finding a good public domain avatar is not easy. I have yet to find one I would want for my avatar.

I'm a visual thinker so I remember them better, but then I never bother to learn their names. So when someone changes their avatar, I don't know it's them, except for about 20-25 members who I know by name. It would probably be better if no one used avatars, then I wouldn't get confused.

I think avatars are an easy way to recognize fellow members, but I'm more likely to just read their names instead of looking at their avatar. Like it was mentioned before, some people just use the same stock avatars, and I think it's annoying as well. :?

I see avatars as a personal thing. There are people who don't feel comfortable drawing attention to themselves or their interests, there are some people who like to change them to random things, there are some people who change theirs to go with their moods while sticking to a theme that they're well known for, there are some people who've had the same avatar since day one and other people who's avatars change with their special interests. I don't think I'll ever stop being a Kinks Fan, and nor is my favourite Kink going to change, so I'm becoming one of the ones who's avatars change with their moods while sticking to a theme that I'm well known for.

My first avatar was a cropped image from a Blue Oyster Cult album cover, but some folks said that it made them feel uncomfortable, so I just Googled my username and found this image.

As has been said before by others, posts without avatars tend to blend together - either with each other or with the post above it.

I tend to ignore avatar-less posts.

it helps, but it's not needed.
i skim over the names at the same time as the post (i read in 2 positions at once), so i'd know the name anyway.
an avatar is just a shortcut to recognition, and helps me to see where i left reading the last time, but that's about it

Oh yeah, I had that issue with the Linux penguin for a while when I first joined here. I thought the same person had multiple personalities.

I'm a visual thinker, so I remember members better by their avatars.

Right after I figure out how to re-size my pic ... rats. I am a word-nerd not a techie.

For some reason, LogicalMom, I've remembered you.

I don't know why....usually I HAVE to see an avatar. Perhaps because you have posted on a lot of my topics.
