Oh, sorry to hear that Dirtdigger. I hope this is a good doctor for you.

So, can I ask you: some people feel sick for a few days after the shot? I read that it should be a day or two, and when it went over this time a couple days more I really worried.

Thank you.

You won't get sick enough to keep you from doing anything. Just very mild flu like symptoms and nothing to worry about. I take the shot because it doesn't have live virus. But, I use to take the shot with live virus which made me very sick for a few days. I prefer the shot now days over the fluMist since it does have the live virus.

I got mine in mid-December. It felt like next-to-nothing for me, although my arm felt awkward hours after it.

Thank you guys - I woke up today telling myself my risk from complications from the flu is probably greater - this has been a reassuring thread.

Now for a little buzzkill ... I haven't had a flu shot since 1992, and I haven't had the flu since then, either.

I noticed your age and I have read that if a person never had the flu, a person doesn't need a flu shot. I was very young in my late 20's when I got so sick but I worked in factories all my life except one place where I worked in an office for about a year and I had to sanitize the computer keyboards because some of those people that I had to help file unemployment claims really grossed me out. But, the risk of getting the flu is much higher when you have to work with a bunch of people who spread their germs around.

One time I went for a flu shot at a drug store and it turned out to be one of those air gun shots - I fainted afterwards. I do not handle puffs of air well, for some reason. It's an anxiety issue for me. After that I only got flu shots at the doctor's office, and with a needle. Never had another problem with them. Needles don't bother me. The finger stick thing they do when you donate blood gets to me too. The needle, no problem.

I used to get flu shots when I worked in a busy office, and I do think they helped me have fewer sick days and avoid the horrible bronchitis I can get with the flu. The years I didn't get one were a lot worse for me. Now that I'm at home most of the time I don't worry about them, as I don't seem to pick up as many bugs.

If you have children in school though, or a spouse in a crowded workplace, even if you are home most of the time, they're going to bring home bugs.

The only time I ever had a flushot using an air gun was when the Swine Flu was running rampant. I got it at our fairgrounds one year. Though I didn't faint or anything, these shots given by air guns are very painful and I didn't like it.

Thimerosal is a preservative used in some flu vaccines. It is based on mercury in the same way that salt is based on sodium. That is, salt has sodium and chlorine (NaCl). However, sodium on its own reacts violently to water and chlorine will kill you if you inhale it. Combine them and it makes your french fries taste good. Similarly, thimerosal is a compound that does not have the same properties as mercury on its own. Also, the amount of thimerosal you could get from a lifetime of vaccinations (assuming they all used it) would be less than what you get from a can of tuna. That is to say, it's safe and not going to poison you or cause neurological damage.

Isn't chemistry amazing?! NaOH and HCl both are horribly hazardous substances to ingest, but combine the two, and you get salt water. And we would all die without salt or water. So fascinating!

As for me, I'm very pro-vaccine. The only vaccine I find pointless for my own personal need is the HPV vaccine. But why risk spreading deadly influenza, especially to my elderly grandparents whom I am around a lot?

NaOH and HCl will dissolve your flesh! I didn't know that you could combine them to make salt water, though. That's really cool.

And yes, chemistry is pretty awesome. And fascinating. I love the stuff. I used to be obsessed with molecule models, although I never actually got any of my own.

I knew a lady who was in her 90's and never got the flu - she had a natural immunity. She was 6 in the 1918 flu epidemic and she ended up caring for her family as they were ill. Some people have it - it's amazing.
