So what's with all these self diagnosed people? It's a real buzzkill when you find someone who is self diagnosed because it makes me think they're trying to justify being a loser. Not saying that us with AS are losers no matter what we do, but a very disorderly part of the syndrome has to do with being social, so it seems like something someone would claim to have to justify being an outcast or recluse. Personally, if I were never diagnosed, I would've never even considered that maybe I have some rare unknown disorder associated with autism.

From what I read, why would getting a doctors 'approval' on the diagnosis serve any differently? Many here complain their doctor was a moron. Who is to say those 'diagnosed' are even diagnosed correctly? There are many threads popping up stating people were diagnosed wrong all the time. People put too MUCH faith in doctors - you know yourself better then anyone and with the correct knowledge, you can view yourself more subjectively (hard at first).

As well, I dont think I'm a loser - I'm living my life the best way I know possible - whatever makes me happy

You havent questioned why some people even went TO self diagnos themselves. I just didnt look for a condition, I spent a lot of time and personal reflection to come to my conclusion. I had other factors in my life outside of being a simple, quiet loner who cant talk well. I dont use the condition as an excuse, never, nor do I really label myself anything beyond human or 'not average.' If I learn a certain way, aspie or not, I learn a certain way. If I cannot talk, aspie or not, I cannot verbally function well.

I share much in common with Aspies - aspie or not, who REALLY cares?

My partner is going for a diagnoses because he wants to know for sure that he really has it. Now he is thinking, he could be HFA instead because he didn't talk when he was two so he really wants a diagnoses to see where he is at. I got one because my parents needed a diagnoses so they can get power over my school because they wanted to put me in another school in a class full of kids who are violent and she kenw it would destroy me because I always mimicked other kids was so good at it. I was in a speciel ed room with retarded-autstic kids and I copied their behavior and acted just like them but at home, I be a normal little girl.

What's the point in getting a diagnoses when you are living a normal life? You can hold down a job and have no problems finding another one, you have a family, you're living a normal life so why a diagnoses? I told my partner he didn't need one because he had no problems in getting a job but he wants to get SSI so he can go to school and get a degree in something and earn more money so he does need a diagnoses. His parents didn't keep any of his medical records from his childhood, the hospital didn't keep any on him from when he got injured in a car wreck, they got rid of the records he told me so he is screwed on getting it so he needs a diagnoses.

Corvus, If you read the ones that think they got miss diagnosed as they taking (Your too smart to be As), is either they did not ask for a Psychologist with experience of diagnosing autism, or they went to another professional in my opinion only a Psychologist with autism experience can make a diagnoses as (most have been in the research area, or work for the research university’s, or in other areas, like I seen this ((ASDS)), I read the past research of the persons book and they on the learning group, and only on the board of autism research " in no areas of As " and I don't know if the person who was using the scale just didn't know how to use it or if the book says 128 score means no As. Cos thats saying As people are either ret*d or not above average in (IQ).

(( Read other page before jumping the gun. ))

/*
The information in this area aims to give you an introduction to:
• how to get a diagnosis, either as an adult, or for your child
• the professionals you may come into contact with during the course of getting a diagnosis
• the complaints procedure for people who are unable to get a diagnosis
• the experiences of other people with an autistic spectrum disorder (ASD) who have been diagnosed.

Why get a diagnosis?

There are some people with an ASD who may never obtain a proper diagnosis and still manage to live full and capable lives. This outcome depends on the person's level of ability and most people with an ASD will usually benefit from a proper diagnosis. Receiving a proper explanation of their condition can:

• bring a sense of relief (both for the individual and the family)
• allow access to services they would otherwise not be entitled to or aware of
• bring about a better understanding of how to deal with any problems the individual with an ASD may have
• give families access to a range of financial help
• help signpost to a range of therapies/approaches which may help an individual with an ASD to cope and learn.

It does not matter what age an individual is; there are no limits as to when they can receive a diagnosis, nor are there any restrictions of the benefits they can receive from obtaining a diagnosis.

Coping with a diagnosis

A diagnosis of an ASD often presents great challenges to the family. It may cause you (and those close to you) to feel confused, upset, angry and even guilty. It will affect every member of your family in different ways and it is important to acknowledge that they will require their own level of understanding and access to particular sources of information, help and support.

It is true the vast majority of Aspies are losers. I am professionally diagnosed and yes I am a loser too. Definition- Losers are people that do not have friends, are not in a relationship, married, working or have kids. That is what human life is all about on this planet. I have dated a lot, been engaged twice, but never married and no kids. I work, but in my opinion am underemployed. The majority of posts on here are about not being able to get along with others, make friends, get a date, have sex or get a job so I think that pretty much attests to the fact most of us have accomplished little in life.

Do you really feal this way? Do you really label yourself as a 'Loser'? If you do than I pity you. I'm what many would call a 'loser' I'm a high school drop-out who works a minimum wage job and depends on his family for shelter. however I also have a tested IQ in the 120s. I often hear about my 'potential' my potential for what? Helping other people? Piling up useless crap I don't need? to hell with that I live a life of the self and I'm happy with that. And any lingering shreds of loneliness I feel are quickly evaporated by the memories of ten years of tortuous public education,
of days when I wondered if it would be easier to kill myself rather than go to school the next day.
I survived and I will NEVER go back to feeling that way again. And if I feel the need to interact with others, that's what I have the 'net for so I can be in control.

You are not a loser because others say you are.

You are only a loser if you define yourself as one.

Think they mean if you try harder, as it takes a person to want, mean look at your attitude kind of advice, if you take that view you won't have the energy to try.. is what they probably saying...
(also like to add this "what you going to do later on, when you can't depend on your family for other reasons in the future.) That is what they "Point of View" is. They worrying about the future.. might not seem it's going anywhere, that is what "Parents / familiy" think about most of the time...

And I don't mean it in a negative way as you can only try as hard as you can.

Yes, It's been explained to me that way. However that's just not the way I've chosen to live my life. My family are worriers, they look to the future, but if you're starring at the horizon it's quite easy to miss the bus that's coming to hit you right now. I don't worry about the future because untill it's here it's just an illusion.

You know, I take serious offense to the fact that so many of these topics have been created. As someone said earlier in this topic, some people didnt have parents that realized something was wrong. In my case, I had a mother(whom I love) didn't give a rats a** about me. She blatantly told my brother and I that we weren't wanted by her, she had us for our father(guess what, she's an aspie). Now you tell me how I was supposed to get a diagnosis at the age of 9 or 10 when my father died when I was 9. We didn't have the money and besides, we're talking 1995 here. Asperger's syndrome was first RECOGNIZED(not discovered) in 1994. I went to therapists since my dad died because I lived a VERY rough childhood(even before he died), one that haunts me still to this day(I AM diagnosed with PTSD). I lived 21 years before I ever found a reason, something that proved why I was different. I didnt even know what autism was, just that Doug Flutie's son is autistic(remember flutie flakes?). I didn't go searching for an answer until I was already in the United States Air Force, and my life was crashing around me. I had no right or reason to be in the air force other than I couldnt keep a job, or get another one. I couldnt take care of myself to social norms. In the Air Force, they tried to justify my differences with not 1, or even 2 personality disorders. No, they tried to label me with FIVE. That's just not logical. It's not reasonable. I had to find the answer on my own because no one else could figure it out. So I went online and started looking up everything they were labeling me with. I looked up anything that fit the symptoms I knew I had(like ADHD's hyperfocus). I happened to stumble upon asperger's syndrome, not looking for it. It was in a wikipedia article on ADHD and I didnt know what it was. I clicked on the link and it was like seeing myself in the mirror. I started looking for everything about autism and asperger's syndrome before i ever told anyone my suspicions. I found this community and read some of the poetry that was up, read the posts. It was like i was talking to myself. I finally found people like me.

So you want to tell me because Im not diagnosed by a clinical psychologist that Im a liar. That Im a fake and a loser looking for acceptance. I've had friends my whole life, they just werent good ones. They werent on the level of my peers. I didnt have a childhood friendship that lasted till now, I have one friend from 5 years ago, thats the oldest friendship I have.

I got into the USAF, into the third hardes job field(requirements wise) with a 99 on the entrance test. I aced Techschool(job training) with the highest score in the class. By no means am I loser, I just dont have the social skills to have relationships that are that close. I dont know how to read body language unless Ive seen it before and then Im still only guessing what it means. I dont understand whats so wrong with me that I can't keep a job, even though Im the hardest worker I know, and have always been told that Im an excellent worker. I have social problems, motor skill problems, not personality problems. Everyone who's ever known me has tried to tell me I have a great personality(when I let go and just allow myself to be me).

People like you are like whites who discriminated blacks, plain and simple. Its a form of segregation to say "you don't have a diagnosis from a doctor. You dont belong here." It's like saying "you dont have the same color skin as mine. You don't belong here"

PS I did try to get the Air force to realize I was on the autistic spectrum somewhere once I had enough information and proof. They told me "asperger's syndrome is diagnosed in children so you can't have that."

Some people cant see, even with thier eyes open, so they close them instead of trying to look.

Reading the original posters other posts. Which are riddled with profane languange

His avatar is art based on psilocybin mushrooms. Dude we are not trying to kill your buzz. You just got some bad/weak stuff that is allowing painfull reality to sink in your head. Are you going to discredit me for it? The world is filled with all kinds of crazy people like me who just want to escape their body because this world flows to the whims of conformity. And for the record, I got got the good stuff in my bowl and I do plenty of chillin. :D

AS is a medical construct. It is constituted by symptoms like Semantic Pragmatic Disorder, Obsessive Compulsive Disorder, Sensory Integration Dysfunction, Executive Dysfunction, motor clumsiness, stimming and so on, in relevant number and in relevant, possibly pathological degrees.

Each symptom taken alone may be present in a person that could be considered "normal". ASD being a spectrum, it can show different faces; what is looked for are external signs of potential brain damage. At the same time, we should consider anyone has different abilities, and so despite not reaching pathological extent many may have troubles even in ordinary basic fields. AS is related mainly to socializing abilities, and yet many may have troubles with socialization even without being AS. Gifted people for example share lot of traits with AS. One who is not "weird enough" may not contribuite to threads about personal "weirdness", yet I think this site is good for helping people even if their AS level is 0.42.

Why are you folks so against people that have a diagnosis. Not every one that has a diagnosis even went looking for it. Like so many other Aspies my age (37) I had possible mis-diagnosis as a kid with dyslexia and several other times I was not diagnosed but rather labeled with things that are all symptoms of Aspergers. I accidently ended up with Aspergers diagnosis because I did not go looking for a diagnosis. I was going to doctor for something else and as she got know me better I guess she started putting pieces of the puzzle together. I had met a guy and girl in other countries online who told me about Aspergers and I thought that sounded just like me, just like my childhood. I had considered bringing it up to my dr but I was afraid to talk about it and not sure how to bring up the subject. But then something weird happened that one appointment she said to me I think you have Aspergers then I told her I had been thinking for awhile that I might have it too. So it went from there.

I never went seeking any mental diagnosis. It just sort of happened. And yeah I do think anyone who doesn't participate actively in real human life is a loser. I mean what's the point if you can't provide for yourself with a good paying job and you don't have a partner or kids. I work, but I do want better for myself like getting out of this apartment and owning a home so I won't have to be surrounded by partying, noisy college kids. I want to have my own place so I can have more quiet space and have a yard to plant a garden. I would like a partner if I could ever find one that wasn't an abusive drunk. I would like to adopt kids but not sure how that could happen. I have a lot worse than Aspergers to deal with. I have a slew of health problems dragging me down, but I do still manage to work and want to go back to school so I can get a better job. I want to do something meaningful in the world not just "exist".

I don't know if anyone else here can understand this but I really want a reason for living; I want to do something positive to help others not just waste resources living a mundane existence going to and from work, watching tv and surfing the internet. Sitting at home in one's own little world is worthless in the scheme of life. I mean we all have to get out and do something to share our gift with the world.

"I think it is sad that there is so much reverse discrimination on here. The diagnosed Aspies are in the minority and are treated as if WE have no right to be here. "

I havent noticed much of this
If I have ever been guilty of it I apologise
I have the upmost respect for the diagnosed for having the balls to
do something I havent yet and supect wont for a while
have the confidence to do and seek a diagnosis or even talk to someone who isnt a string of binary about it.

That's it!! The self-diagnosed deserve their own forum!! We keep getting picked on!

I think the best diagnosticians of AS are childhood bullies ;).

I have no problem with anyone, regardless of diagnosis, lack thereof, etc. WP would much very dull without some of our more interesting self-diagnosed and not-sure-if-I-have-it-or-not members.

For me, learning about AS explains my bizarre behavior as a child and my continued quirks & perceptual issues to this day. It is a comfort to know there might be a "something" that I am, and that there are others like me, or who at least think they are.

I mean, as long as people aren't trying to falsely claim disability (I for one have no intention of filing for disability), what's the real issue here? Is it just a pecking order thing?
