I think it depends on what the reason for the unnecessary laughing is. I'll list 3 potential reasons for unnecessary laughing.

1. Nullification - Lightening the mood by finding humor in the situation.

2. Satire - Making fun of the people involved in the situation and/or the reactions of people to the situation.

3. Malice - Sadistically enjoying the misfortune of people involved in the situation.

The first reason is normal, but it's not always appropriate and people are likely to take it the wrong way.

The second reason is also normal, as long as you're not indifferent to serious situations. If you're completely indifferent to serious situations, and enjoy making fun of the people involved (including victims) and the reactions of people to the situation, you're probably schizoid.

The third reason is never really normal. If you sadistically enjoy the misfortune of people, you're probably either a sociopath or a narcissist.

This is a very good analysis but which is applicable for me i dont know.
I think it was nullification trying to find some humour while reading the painful situation so as to ease the pain.

Another time I worked as a salesclerk at a drugstore change. We had a young lady from Botswanna, a frumpy but sweet dispositioned african peasant woman on our staff whom everyone liked . She did some task incorrectly. So stepped out from the behind the register to instruct. She responded by covering her mouth and kinda giggling. At first I started to get angry (like she wasnt taking me seriously). As I got more angry she laughed even more, which baffled and angered me even more. She isnt a mean person-why she laughing at me?

But then the words of a lady anthopology professor from years before drifted into my head. The professor told us that people in non western cultures laugh, but they laugh "not because they find something 'funny'. They laugh because they are embarrassed, or other reasons..."

So then I realized that she was laughing not because she was amused, but because she was embarrassed. And that she probably was taking me TOO seriously ( OMG... I shoulda known better) So I told her...well...you didnt know the right way before...so now you do know (like its no big deal). She noded like she understood, and stop giggling. We both went back to work. And a fight caused by a cultural misunderstanding was avoided.

I remember working for a pest control company and one day one of the big client of a Bank called up telling me that cockroaches have rampaged his office and
he could see them everywhere
i couldnt control my laughter and kept on laughing while conversing
ultimately he complained to my manager who decided to sack me :P
Somewhere down the line i dont know where to laugh and where not to laugh

i tend to laugh in situations where i realize it is very important not to laugh.

once i think of the fact that it would have dire consequences if i laughed, then my face gets pulled into a smirk, and i try to wrestle with that smirk knowing that if it goes any further, i will have a lot to explain to vindicate myself.
that compounds the situation, and my face will then contort into grimace that i try so hard to suppress, that the pressure builds up until it breaches my self control, and i explode into uncontrollable laughter. i know it is causing me irreparable harm to be laughing so hard in such an unfunny situation, and when i peep at peoples stoney faced disenchantment whilst i am laughing, it adds fuel to the fire, and i almost choke with a redoubling of my paroxysmal laughter. no one knows why i am laughing and they all have grave expressions on their faces and i know i have busted my reputation, and that even makes me laugh more.

it is a very problematic situation. i always regret it after i have calmed down.

there was a thread earlier about mirror neurons where a youtube video of a person laughing was the feature, but this youtube video i am going to post now is very similar to how i can not curtail my mirth in inappropriate situations. i have been told before it is a fake by a single person, but i believe it is real because i identify with the man very much. no one in the audience has any emotional connection to the host, and they remain stoney faced despite his failure to suppress his laughter. i can not believe his laughter was fake because it so closely resembles how i feel when i try to suppress my own laughter.

This guy failed to see the funny side of it. When you think of it, it is funny to think of cockroaches running all over the fancy office, but it's not as if you put them there!! He really overreacted by complaining to the boss. Perhaps it wouldhave have been better to say "Sorry but that sounds so funny I can't help it, we'll send our pest controllers out asap" but it wouldn't really "get through" to such a stuck-up guy!

OK I misunderstood a bit, so he WAS blaming the company for it as maybe they had been there and yet there were still cockroaches there? I thought it was maybe the first time he was contacting the company, having noticed the pest problem.

I guess it was unprofessional but I've also done unprofessional things from time to time.

You sound like a very interesting and caring person like many of us on WP. I joined here about 7 months ago and it is definitely the website Ispend the most time on! The folk here are so much more respectful to the views of others, unlike some NT news sites I've seen.

Sorry I seem to be off-topic and going at a tangent here... I tend to do that sometimes...

I could have written this!!

Life is amusing isn't it?? I'm glad someone else can see things the way I do. I think that surely one of the greatest wisdoms is that everything is just utterly and totally bizarre (in a good way, kind of).

I like to laugh. It keeps me alive.

Laughing randomly could be a result of psychosis, hearing or seeing things that makes one laugh.
It could be a sign of mania when accompanied with euphoria.

Those are mentally ill states.

It is more likely due to being uncomfortable; the shock to the system causes a confused emotional response, so a laugh comes out instead of whatever elsewould be more appropriate.
It's not uncommon with those on the autisic spectrum actually. One person (completely NT) was told off for laughing at a funneral, but it was not on purpose. She didn't feel any actual emotion but the emotion was coming out in laughing, so both inappropriate and blocking her from feeling the emotion!

I'm gonna assume it's more the later as you suggested no accompanying factors suggesting mental illness or altered state.

Laughing randomly isn't an illness.
Just like crying randomly, it can be a sign something is up, but you can't assume it's an illness, it just has some cause we can't directly see, which is why I believe it's more likely confused emotional responses in this case, as there is an absense of psychosis or mood disruption.

Namaste is absolutely right.

When I was younger (and not a homeowner worried about mice in my kitchen as we speak) I might well have WANTED to laugh in that situation as well. But I wouldve bitten my tongue.

I was a salesclerk at a mom and pop owned stationery store. Many local businesses had accounts and would order ofiice supplies from us on the phone, or would put them on their bill when their people shopped in the store.

One guy (like your guy) came in the store angry and ready to complain about some billing problem (that didnt involve us salesclerks on the floor but I had to relay the message to office folks upstairs). So this tall guy comes up to me ready to ream out the company - so I m bracing myself for his tirade. And what comes out of his mouth IS a tirade- but spoken in a very high pitched UN authoritative gay limpwristed voice. So it was like being flogged with a wet noodle. Apologies to LGBTG community- but his combination of fury and effeminacy was hilarious!

Inwardly I was laughing my ass off at the guy- but I sucked in it- and nodded and promised to relay his complaint to my superiors- and finnaly summoned a high ranking person down to talk to him. And that was that. But namaste is right- that was what she shouldve done- bitten her tongue and not laughed.

I used to laugh when I was being told off as a child, because of nervousness and not being able to control my facial expressions; all autism related.

We autistics cannot control our facial expressions in the same way, and the expression of emotion is also different.

I laugh at the thought of putting people in pain, for some reason. Of course I never would, but it's just a funny thought for me for some reason. I think it's just that I have a horrible sense of humour, but I think anyone can just find themselves laughing if they don't know how else to respond.
