I live in a dorm room with two roommates. Being normal people as they are, they like keeping the room bright. Very bright. My eyes hurt, I can barely see anything on my laptop's screen and this whole light situation is driving me crazy. When I'm in light spaces, I literally lose the will do to anything, I just want to cover my eyes and sit like that. I can't get anything done, I can't study, I can't play video games, it sounds so ridiculous when I say that a room full of light is crippling me and causing a lot of stress. I like to keep my space dimly lit, it gives me much comfort, like a shield that protects me from the outside and all the activity that's going outside. I don't how to help myself or what to do, I'd appreciate any advice on how to deal with this because it's really really eating up my nerves and productivity.

Is this recent?

Check the full side effects sheet of any medication you have taken lately. Even seemingly benign medications can cause extreme photosensitivity (making lights hurt the eyes.)

I had this reaction to an antibiotic once. It lasted a looong long time, longer than the side effects sheet admitted to. It is now my feeling that anything on a side effects sheet is blanded down so they can stay on market with that pill. So, just in case, check all side effects. Ask your pharmacist for the full sheet, which will be long as your arm; not the one they put online or give to patients (when they even do.)

I also like www.askapatient.com as those are honest feedback from regular people. Sort of like Yelp for pills.

No, it's not recent, it has always bothered, it's just that I don't have any energy left to tolerate it anymore. I'm not on any medication.

OK thank you.

Is it possible to request a single room? I did that in college when I didn't like my roommate. You certainly have valid reason.

For night time to give your eyes a rest can you buy a sleep mask? They sell those at most drugstores and there are plain ones (without the lace or ruffles) suitable for males available too.

The rest of the time, I would prevail upon your roomies to please use book lights and things like that instead of always having the lights blazing.
