I guess we're lucky to have this in Toronto.

Worst mistake I ever made was telling my GP about my Asperger's diagnosis. She treated me like a clueless child from that point on.

I never reveal my diagnosis to docs anymore, and fortunately I do well pretending to be NT.

Best doc I ever met was a gastroenterologist... he listened to me, was respectful, and treated me as a partner in my own care. They are out there but few and far between.

The problem is that most Aspies are very smart and know how to do research. I have found that when you go in there with more knowledge/intellect than they expect you to have, the docs who are egomaniacal feel threatened and start accusing you of being "invested in diagnoses". I had one doc laugh right in my face when I said that my post-surgery pain had "increased exponentially" in the last week. He said, "exponentially, huh?"

The absolute worst place for me is an Emergency Room. My defenses are down there, it's a sensory nightmare (in a big hospital) and meltdowns are always a threat there.

I really try to avoid doctors unless absolutely necessary. Sad, really.

I totally agree with you 100%.

No. My last therapist was an "Existentialist" however, and god forbid I actually disagree with such a vapid philosophical school of thought which surely must have all of the (Self-referential, since you create them! Sweet, huh?) answers. I'm personally much more inclined to a Virtue Ethicist or Buddhist (IE: Cyclical/Samsaric) way of looking at the world then as a closet nihilist who says "You're on your own. Good luck.", in essence. Would I say he "hated me", though? No. Looked down on me because I didn't have the answers he did? Very probably.

No problems with GPs. But have had problems with a support worker. She thinks I don't have Autism, which I don't think she's qualified to diagnose.

ahhh one of those.....its probably because she is used to working with profoundly autistic people [assuming she is from a ASD org/company] and absolutely anyone who doesnt meet those stereotypes is non autistic according to them, they unfortunately dont have a balanced judgement for comparing people.

have experienced the same with people at mine, have been living in a specialist residential facility for four years and half of its adults/half of it is kids and teens, all of us are on the severe or profound spectrums of autism so it isnt like any of us are ever missed.
several of the staff from the kids unit-who dont work in ours thinks am not autistic nor LD as she asks if woud write something down for her [am not able to write],she wonders why am not doing the things she has asked,am assessed as having limited mental capacity and have a power of attorney.
she once went mental when had been attacked by a fellow residentant and fought back; in her mind this other resident is a helpless acutely low functioning autie and am evil for protecting self; ended up with a chunk of flesh taken out of arm and a broken finger that never got attention from them because they were busy fawning over the innocent resident who was terribly attacked  and its now disfigured, but of course shoud of known better being non autistic.
she also thinks am the only adult who doesnt get any personal care as she only brings up every other resident together when enquiring to our staff if the right staffers are on in the morning to do the personal care for them, regardless of what she thinks have actualy been told am the person with the highest support and personal care needs, besides one other resident am also the only resident who needs two staff [aka two to one] when out.

it is a personal issue of mine with support staff, they need to stop using fellow residents as a yard stick for diagnosing others!

as for the original question...
am only hated by the support staff that were sacked and banned from working with vulnerable adults ever again due to the complaints of life changing abuse had put in,was severely abused in institutional and residential care by the same network of staff, physicaly, sensory and mentaly abused as well as allowed to be sexualy abused in front of them by another resident because had not understood what was going on.
oh yes am hated by them and hope it hurts them for what they did.

the specialists of mine are amazing, well not the pyschiatrist but thankfuly dont see him and if he does come, will refuse to see him. ;)
they are the social services learning disability team;am seeing the senior pyschologist ocasionaly-he comes to review things with staff here, am seeing the pyschologist under him twice a week and the pyschiatrist. was originaly gotten to interact with the pyschologist over time by her bringing her dog in which worked, and its also home visits they all do as am not able to access the community.
am also working in autism & LD activism plus the social network of mine with the autism awareness co ordinator from the same team.

Sometimes they do but then a lot of people become annoyed with me after knowing me for a while. Only people with saint-like patience can get to know and like me. :) My disabilities counsellor at my new school is starting to get annoyed with me now. ...

For the most part, yes... especially psychiatric workers. I've had better experiences with most other types of doctors, though.

I also dread starting with any new counselor or therapist, since they soon either start to hate me or misunderstand me, which either way is a lonely process. Last year I had started seeing a new counselor, and the staff there suddenly decided to inform me that this counselor no longer practiced there, and that they were not offering counseling at all. For six months I labored under the illusion that this was true, then decided to call back, only to find that she was still practicing there! Fortunately she was not responsible for that lie, and was astonished that the staff should tell such whoppers. I still don't know why I was lied to.

Thank you all so much for the responses, it makes me feel not so alone.

I, too, feel like professionals get annoyed or misunderstand me after a while. i've been lied to as well.... What is puzzling about being lied to is why. Maybe they have to seem like they are helping, like saying they will follow through on something, and because they don't want to get involved or don't care, don't, so they invent a story to appease you (I've experiened this with counselors when i was in college).

Or they will come up with some BS resource and tell you to call this resource (a way of passing the buck), when they are in a position to offer exactly what they claim this other resource helps with. This is when a significant amount of time has passed and i've pretty much figured that they've given up trying to help.

Sometimes I feel like I'm one step away......if only they would listen to the specifics of the problem. But the problem is, most people don't want to take the time - and many of us autistics are pretty detailed - our minds work a different way. They may look at that as simple stubbornness or craziness. :(

I find this totally inspiring and your actions heroic.
Thanks for not putting up with it and finding a way to deal with it effectively.

This brings to mind another incident. I had been seeing a counselor for awhile, and asked if she could start seeing both myself and my husband. She could not, but referred me to another office where they were offering free counseling to couples. So I called them and left a message, which was returned. They took some info and then never called me back. I left several messages, then realized they had no intentions of accommodating us. I mean, why on earth didn't they just tell me that they couldn't work with us, for whatever reason? :?

See the above comment.

This is so true! I once heard an NT say that autistics talk in paragraphs, and NTs talk in sentences. Maybe because when NTs converse, the rest of the conversation is taking place on a non verbal basis, so as you say, maybe they can't understand the way we think and talk?

UK doctors don't get paid like American doctors do, pre-ObamaCare. Outside of state-run health care, doctors are quick to diagnose so they can make money off of you.

Wow quite a few bad experiences here. I hope I'll be fine with my next therapist (which I haven't got yet). I've had two myself - the latter of which actually specializes in ASDs and was brilliant - too bad I can't continue with her due to schedule problems. The first I only had for a few sessions and referred me to the second a couple of sessions after I mentioned my AS to him.
