It's amazing how much free publicity a stupid comment followed by an apology can generate. This thing was in every major newspaper and god knows how many blogs. You can't by this kind of publicity. If nothing else Cole is a smart business man. 50 Cent didn't get this kind of publicity over his autism comments, he could learn from Cole. Is 'offend/apologize' the new 'flash your crotch to the paparazzi'? You decide.

A good well written apology. He's obviously sincere and I appreciate that he'd step up and try to right the wrong. I think some of you need to drop the cynicism.

I didn't know who he was until this morning.

Giving money isn't a really relevant gesture from someone who's rich. On the other hand, giving your time in order to educate yourself--that's relevant. If the guy goes and reads up on autism and learns what it's about and why using "autistic" as an insult is Not Cool, I think that shows more desire to make up for what he said than any amount of money could.

I wonder if anybody's given him a list of good references to read about autism? He already seems to know some things, like how some auties are college students and others are little kids, and how some of us are really independent and others very disabled. That's more than some people know.

Seems like he could just tweak the lyrics a bit, put out a new version of the song. No need to withdraw it completely.

^ Agreed and personally I accept his apology.

It's very rare for a rapper to apologize about any of their lyrics, much less put out an apology that actually comes across as genuine.

Hip Hop is an extreme art form to a degree with strength, male posturing, super dominance, and often times sociopathic, violent, and criminal tendencies often being held up as the standard to strive for and be. As an avid Hip Hop fan I recognize it and love the art form even though I totally disagree with how it is nowadays. I grew up with it and love the beats.

I can tell you one thing though, with what I said above in mind it took a lot of balls for him as a rapper to come out with that apology because from what I've noticed a lot of Hip Hop fans saw that as a weakness and are basically questioning his manhood about it. Having feelings, not upholding a certain image and just plain not standing by your lyrics is seen as feminine, weak, and damn near gay to many in the Hip Hop community. It's a loss of credibility in many eyes. And yeah, I see the irony in a subculture that loves to sag it's pants in the back which is pretty much the universal prison signal that you like it up the ass. Sometimes I really wish I wasn't such a fiend for dope beats.

I for one applaud him for being human, cause Hip Hop for the most part doesn't allow it. You're either some street anti-hero or you're a zero.

I think he should put the apology where the sun doesn't shine. Simple as that.

I won't get into a racial issue here, but believe me, anyone making a rap song that said something so hateful about J Coles mixed race, single mother or anything else, would NEVER hear the end of it and there would be NO APOLOGY ACCEPTED by him or his community of rappers. So, no, he's an idiot and he can shove his apology.

You kinda did make it racial.

And how do you even know that?

I'd personally accept his apology. I find that it is such the norm to "admit no wrong" so you can't be held to anything. That, and pride. It's the social norm, it seems.

Even without a financial payment or something, for him to have said what he did is so..... so against our social norms.... I dunno... I think it probably took a lot. It would take a lot for most people to say something like that.

Do I think he's a hero? In a way, no, and yet in a way, yes. Of COURSE a person SHOULD apologize for something like that, so what he said is simply what he SHOULD do. End of story, right? weeellll..... then again, there's the whole internal battle here. We all have to deal with our own pride when it comes to something like this, ESPECIALLY in our culture. In that respect, I think he is a hero. Could he have done more? Well, sure. There is always more a person can do. But what has he done already?

Considering how arrogance seems to be the norm for our society in general and our celebrities specifically.... well, this little bit of humility is absolutely amazing. Kudos to him.

THAT SAID.... it remains to be seen how he will speak of that particular line/song in the future. Is this a momentary thing? Will it be consistent in the future? His continuing attitude will be what REALLY makes it stick or not.

[/opinion]

He at least shows a little maturity and thought in this apology. I didn't take it personally, and I wouldn't take it personally if it happened again unless they were talking about me or someone I know.

I still don't understand why they're making such a huge deal about the things he said regarding autism while simultaneously utterly ignoring the fact that he verbally abused black people and women in the same song. If people are going to demand an apology from him, it should be for all the things he said. We shouldn't get special treatment just because we're "disabled"; saying hurtful things about anyone for any reason, be it disability, race, sex, religion, etc. should not be tolerated.
