I guess people HAVE accused me of things that could be called egocentric. That IS how autism got its name! Ironic but true. Look at how many autistic people behave, and you can see how the impression was made, even though it is often FALSE for a lot of higher functioning autistics.(lower functioning ones may never be able to express their real goals/intentions). Oh well, in my case, and many HAVE come to know this, even ones accusing me of being selfish, I am generally altruistic! I wish the whole world was! If they WERE, there would be NO wars, NO rich lawyers, fewer people in jail, fewer suicides, NO robberies, NO racism, NO sexism, etc.... HECK, there would even be less disease!

I want to tread as lightly as I can here. I am unsure of the exact definition you intend the word "altruistic," so I will assume it is Webster's (unselfish regard for or devotion to the welfare of others). Since this "in the field" this can be defined many different ways (person's X way to belief as to the most successful method to alleviate poverty would perhaps be different then person Y) it is hard to say that any one person, objectively speaking, has all of the answers. To suggest otherwise, one could even gather, would be to engage in egotism.

I never claimed to have all the answers. I never have, and never will. I view altruism to basically be freely giving. I helped people move, helped the poor, helped the sick, TAUGHT, etc... THAT is altruism. The problem today is that most people will struggle to get ahead EVEN if it means shooting someone or walking on someones back.

MY being atruistic does LITTLE. If everyone was, it WOULD change the world. I don't know what the person next to you needs, but YOU may.

Steve

HEH, starbuline!

WOW, what have you done that came off as arrogant? Or was it just a justful pride and display of what you know of interest areas that make people THINK you are being boastful? What made you come off as cold, or is it just the autistic distance and lack of social presentation?

BTW I don't think you come off as EITHER here, although most of your answers are terse which APPEARS cold. I'm not complaining, it IS a nice habit! 8-)

I don't consider myself to be egocentric.

Off topic. Congrates Fiz on being a forum mod. :D

 Ha! I wish. In retrospect I think my post might have come off a little more harshly then I intended. If that's the case, my apologies...

Everyone on the planet is egocentric, we aspies just aren't able to hide it. Since we get it pointed out so often I'm willing to bet that we actually make ourselves more empathetic than the average person throughout a lifetime.

the words "autism" and "autistic" stem from the Greek word "autos," meaning self

Paul Erdos the great aspie mathematician always said that he was reality when ever challenged to do something that he himself did not want to do.

so yeah by way of default we are the very definition; the very archetype of egotism.

Just look at my user name. Being socially awkward and highly precocious did come with its toll on my personality.

Yes and I am egocentric. So that isn't a misperception on their part. Although I was accused of it before I actually became that way.

I'm not sure how to answer this post but, I'll do my best though.
Some people I've come across over the years have stated that, I tend to focus on various things sometimes to the degree of becoming boring in a conversational manner where at other times it's been revealed that there can be times my attention span is not apllied enough so, I guess the term of egocentric would only apply depending upon the persons you've befriend or have come across. Personally, most people consider me to be unorthodox at best. :)
