when i was thirteen i was taught not to talk about my special interests because it bores the other person so now i have to find something else to speak about, which is very very hard and i end up not saying anything at all other than "hello, my name is emily, How are you? im doing fine"

Yes. I've learned the art of listening. It serves me very well in social situations (unless I am with another person who is quiet).

I purposefully and consciously don't talk much to people because I know I can ramble on. That makes me aloof but it also protects the listeners from hearing something they may find insulting, controversial or in poor taste. I consciously speak with very limited words in order to not offend someone as I actually never know when I've crossed the line.

From what I've observed, your written rambles are very well thought out and informative. I think it's great.

I ramble when I'm nervous around a person or really excited but mainly nervous. I lose the rhythm of my sentence so blabber out connective words like "and, um, like" then make daft noises when I finally give up.
There is much pressure when there is another human standing opposite waiting for me to deliver something to them.

I ramble and I mumble and when I'm talking about a special interest I also talk really fast. I prefer to write my thoughts rather than speak them... I get understood better when I write.

I was aware that it was a common symptom, though I didn't know it was considered something we all do. :P Somehow, I just thought that there were other aspies out there who didn't ramble.

Same here. People have often complimented my writing, actually. I've never thought it was all that special though. I do tend to pay a ridiculous amount of attention to detail when I'm writing papers for school or whatever, though naturally I let my guard down somewhat online.
