Making conversation is like trying to diffuse a bomb in the pitch black with a strobe light 3 inches in front of your face.

To make a conversation with someone new I suggest that you pretend that they are a famous poet, or artist, or holy person, or bus traveller, or knitter. Someone that you would naturally care about, and that you deeply admire and respect. And then ask them a question about what is going on this instant... "Can I buy you a drink?" "Are you looking forwards to the Olympics?" "I see you on this bus often, do you work in town here?" "How do you like your Cannondale? I saw you on it yesterday."

YOU have to be into the other person's story. What are THEY interested in? You have to want to know what they are all about, and get them to tell their story to you. The key to unlocking other people's stories is to like them before you even start to make a conversation.
