mental illness is a convenient scapegoat. 95% of shooters don't have mental illness. 95% of folks with mental illness never commit a violent crime. anger, not mental illness is the risk factor. mental illness without substance abuse is not associated with violence. folks with mental illness, however, are more likely to be victims of violent crime. if someone isn't suicidal or homicidal he/she should be allowed to own firearms.

i am in chronic treatment for bipolar disorder. i see a doc every six months and take a pill every day. i've had no episodes for over twenty years and was never violent during episodes (as is the norm). i have a good marriage and just resigned from a steady job to go back to school. i would be disqualified from owning a gun in canada. it's ridiculous.

Obama keeps saying he's going to close the gun show loophole, but I haven't seen any action yet.

The term "gun show loophole" is misleading.

If you go to a gun show and buy a gun from a licensed dealer, you have to meet the same background check and record keeping requirements as if the sale was being conducted in a brick and mortar store.

If you buy a gun from an individual who is not a licensed dealer, then there are no special requirements.

This can happen anywhere. A gun sold by an individual who is not licensed whether it be at a garage sale, flea market, across the fence to your neighbor or yes, a gun show, there are no special requirements for conducting background checks and recording the sale in most states.
