Your special interests...
Eh, there are downsides to any approach. I obsessed over playing the oboe from age 10 to 20 (and made it my college major and career goal) – only to get Lyme disease and have to give it up.
And my special interests since then have been very silly (writing Star Wars fan fiction, for example) so if I've gotten good at it, it's not really anything to brag about! Haha
Over the years, I've had interests in films, exercise/working out, Star Wars, comics, UK politics, ice hockey, shopping malls, phone books, Tintin, zoos, Doctor Who, heavy metal music, Lego, economics, old TV indents and continuity, Ren & Stimpy and live music. I'm sure there's others that I've missed but that's all I can remember right now. Some of these still endure (I've mentioned those in the current interests thread) while others have fallen by the wayside.
Psychology. I am really interested in mental illnesses and how the human mind works. It's a handy interest, I suppose, when it comes to learning how to act in social situations. Although, I think the biggest problem is that it doesn't come naturally. Even if I know what to do or say, it's hard when you have to fake it. People's minds are fascinating.
Home and Away. After watching about 1500 of the latest episodes (with some gaps in between, 'cause I couldn't find the episodes) and having to wait for new episodes, I found the very first episodes, so I've started at the beginning, which goes back to 1988 (before I was even born).
I tend to get a bit obsessed with things. If we play a game and I like it, I just wanna play it over and over until I get sick of it. When I get slightly into a tv-show, I don't know what to do with my life when I run out of episodes. There's some interests that is a bit on and off. It tends to be a bit all or nothing.
Thank goodness for the invention of the DvD, eh? I'm still watching reruns of TV shows I was obsessed with as a child: Twilight Zone, Dark Shadows and Fireball XL-5.
My main interests are languages and cultures of Asia; and kanji/hanzi. I'm also interested in other languages and biochemistry/biology (since experiencing horrible withdrawal from SSRI meds), and Buddhism/spirituality.
In the past I've been interested in butterflies, Star Wars and Aztecs.
I seem to be developing an interest in latch hook rug making and Nanoblocks at the moment, mainly because my health so bad due to withdrawal symptoms I need things to distract me.

I remember antidepressant withdrawal. Not SSRI but still not nice all the same. Sent me nuts for a while but it's settling down now. I was on them for 10 years. I don't take anything now. I hope you feel better soon.
I have some latch hook rug kits amongst my arts and crafts supplies. I should give them a try.
What kinds were you taking? I thought SSRIs were about all that was available anymore.
I was on Mirtazapine, which is (or was when I started taking it) relatively new. I believe it's what they call a NASSA. Unsure about it's exact type. It's commonly known as the legal cannabis though because it zones you out and gives you the munchies.
i like Sonic, i have liked sonic for almost 5 years now and i dont spend as much time on it now as i did which was all day, but now, about 3-4 hours drawing sonic and RPing with sonic characters all day.
i think and obsess about sonic more when im depressed, anxious, or upset. its an escape of mine and i use it to cope with being different.
if i cant have anything to do with sonic, i dont know what would happen, i think i would just shut down, become depressed and angry.

Interesting. Never heard of NASSAs, I shall have to do some research. Everybody I know who's taken SSRIs has had issues with weight gain, aside from various other unpleasant side effects (they sometimes have shocking side effects in patients under 25 years of age - a fact not often publicized).
I have so far avoided all laboratory antidepressants, because bizarre things sometimes happen when Big Pharma starts tinkering with human nueroreceptors. Personally, I had very positive results from Psilocybin mushrooms many years ago (effects researchers are finally catching on to), but I don't have access to them anymore.
Er - sorry for going so far off topic. I apologize, Ms Bumble, for hijacking your thread. Shutting up now.

I have a few interests. The main three being aviation the Simpsons and Star Wars. I tend to find it easier to think about only one of these interests at a time. I don't exactly know how I choose which interest to study . I also have had life long loves for animation and house designe. As for the aviation one I could spend all day sat at the end of a runway watching the planes but unfortunately it is rather difficult to pursue this interest and this particular activity.

Watching reruns (can you call it reruns when it's on DVD?) isn't the same. I wish the series I follow could just serve me new episodes as I catch up.
That's a good thing about Home and Away, it's been running for over 25 years, and still going strong. Can't buy DVDs of it though (they've soon reached 6000 episodes, not very compatible with DVDs), so I rely on people uploading them. The new ones run on TV, of course, but since I live in Norway, the episodes airing on TV here is 1/2-1 years old.
I was watching a fairly new series recently, until a caught up on Netflix. Thought it might've been more on the internet, but no, and then, later, I found out the show had been cancelled mid-season. Imagine my frustration when I found out I was left with a cliffhanger for all eternity.

Another interest of mine is languages, as well as cultural differences.

What I'm currently interested in is Disney/Pixar's Cars, Disney's Planes, Where the Wild Things Are, Monsters University, My Little Pony, animation, cetacea, corvidae, Sterling Holloway, plushies, sensory processing disorder, and the Help Find Sparky campaign on Facebook. HFS concerns a young woman who lost her Pikachu plush at Disneyland, and she really needs him as a coping item due to sensory issues. I guess the reason why HFS has become one of my special interests is because I see so much of myself and Dory in this girl and her Sparky. If Dory were lost, I'd do everything I could to locate her, too.
.....For those who don't know, Dory's my favorite dolphin plushie who also helps me with anxiety and sensory issues.

I am interested in anything I can make with my hands. Examples of my interests: tutu making, tiara making (for ballet), wig making, costume making (for ballet/theatre), millinery, jewelry making, quilling (paper filigree), quilting (sewing again), knitting... the list could go on and on. I actually worked as a wig maker. Also as a ballet costume maker. Those were wonderful jobs.
I am also interested in research. For example: I extensively research anything I am going to purchase and make that my micro-interest for the week or month (depending on the cost and options available). Then I purchase and move on to the next researchable item.
I tend to obsessively buy books about things I am interested in, but I rarely read them. (Trying to change that now...I have a stack of 4 books by my bed now. Strike that! 3 books... just finished one! )
My other special interest is knowing everything about Hollywood. I obsessively check Hollywood industry websites (hollywoodreporter.com, deadline.com, variety.com, etc.), and celebrity gossip sites (tmz.com, radaronline.com), and any time I watch a tv show or movie, I have to know who represents them, so IMDB Pro. It's the first thing I do, sometimes before Facebook.
I'm just now learning how I tick. I didn't know that my interests could be perceived as unusual or excessive (but they are...).

Not diagnosed yet, but it looks pretty obvious to me!

Feel free to ramble on I don't mind. I go off on tangents in my own threads all the time (or can do).
I find myself concerned about the effects of antidepressants and am not a huge fan of them. I had quite a few side effects whilst I was taking them that my drs kept putting down to anxiety and depression by mistake (headaches, aches, pains, dizziness, burning rubber smells that were not there followed by an intense deja vu, panic attacks etc. I don't get those symptoms since I stopped all medications and chemicals (includes some food chemicals and substances like alcohol). Nasty things antidepressants are. I worry about the medical industry giving them out like candy and wonder if they are making people sick and doing more harm than good.
They never helped with my social issues either.
I am over 25, but out of curiosity what are the shocking side effects in those whom are younger?
