And I try to avoid them...they're a waste of money, especially in NYC. :P

When I was living in San Jose, I took public transportation occasionally. The summer before I moved, I used it a lot of times to go out and explore around Santa Clara county. Luckily I was granted a discount card which allowed me to ride at a lower cost on transportation throughout the Bay Area. So I was also eligible for discounts on CalTrain (which I never rode) and BART (which we usually took to San Francisco or the Oakland Coliseum to see the A's and the Raiders play). I never rode BART when I had the discounts though.

BART was usually clean, except I didn't like going under the bay to reach The City. The Transbay tube made my ears plugged.
Busses are usually dirty, and filthy at times but it didn't really bother me unless the busses were crowded. I did like riding the Light Rail trains in San Jose since they were quiet, clean and had the air conditioning on when the days were hot. Even the station platforms were maintained well.

I took the bus to school in downtown cleveland for the first semester.

Unfortantly, the bus stop was 2.5 miles away from where I live, so I had to bike to it in what is very hilly country to reach said bus stop.

Once I reached the bus stop, I would have to wait for the bus which came every 1/2 hour, and if the bus had no bike rack, I would just have to wait for the next one

Since the highway system in cleveland is limited by the geography (cuyahoga valley), it takes a tremendous amount of time to reach downtown, and once I got there, I would have to ride my bike to school (about 1mile, flat ground).

All said the normal morning, from starting out from my house to school, the trip was about 2 hours.

the next semester, my father transfered to tri-c metro (my college) and I got to ride with him to school every day. it only took 1/2 hour,in good traffic. In bad traffic it was about a hour.

I think cleveland needs a subway system bad.

Public transportation (as in buses) scare me. Too many people. But I agree, I don't think I would mind trains at all.

Personally i mostly take trains. The're comfortable and the fastest general transportation in Holland. I don't mind taking buses though; it's only the fact that they are more smelly, dirty and less comfortable here.

Never had any problems with people in trains; it seems that many people who travel by trains here are much more nicer to me then when i meet them elsewhere. Maybe because in a train you're in a more constricted environment, and are forced to be nice. Once i met at group of 4 17yo software engineers who had a small successfull company already, and i joined almost immediatly the fun. Now i work part-time in that company (also as software engineer).

We never had a car at home, so we always go by public transportation. It's much better for the environment also :)

I don't drive, so I really have no other option but to use public transport. I'm pretty comfortable using it, and only occasionally do I make a mistake and get on the wrong train or something.

I like to go by train or bus. There are a lot of people which to watch, but the rules are clear and there are only a few occasions I have to interact to others. I like to read during the ride as well. But I remember a day I was sick and I left the bus because there was no empty seat and I was too shy to ask for one. It was a rainy day and I had to wait some time for the next bus.

Yes i have and were i lived had better than most but it still could be better. In the United States of America public transports outside of major metroplexs are non-existing. 97 percent of the money used for roads not mass transit. Hellish commutes by car are not uncommon ppl live in massive urban sprawls even what sould be a 20 min trip or 32 kilometres can become a 60 min nightmare. and the stores are 1.5 kilometres or more from homes. I swear at the car centric design of most of the US :  most days.

When I lived in Melbourne I used trams, buses and trains all the time. In the 4 years I have lived in Bendigo, I have found the public transport system to be a joke.

I really need to get my drivers license and buy a car asap.

I need using public transportations, because I don't have a driving licence.

But I prefer waking although I have to walk for hours. Why? I hate crowds in buses, I can save the mone and spend it on something better (like videogames :) ) and I think there's a lot of interesting things we can't see if we're in a vehicle.

With the exception of the school bus, I've never used public transportation. Around here, you're either an illegal immigrant or ghetto if you use it and since we're the complete opposite of both (and have perfectly good cars), we don't have any reason to.

I also don't drive...
I have gone through several different phases over the years where I took the bus, but for the most part I am pretty handy with my bike and am comfortable riding relatively long distances.
Riding the bus regularly was getting to depress me. They always seemed gloomy and surreal...
I hated being a slave to the crazy irate bus drivers..and creepy passengers..Now in Houston we have a light rail, which is kinda fun 'cause you get to ride backwards...but it keeps hitting people...or at least it used to, and it only serves a limited area..it wants to expand and all the neighborhoods that it wants to expand into don't seem to want it...whenever I ride the lighrail it is just for novely sake because there's nowhere that it goes that I can't go on my bike.

When I lived in New Orleans, where half the time my bike was either broken down or stolen, i rode the bus fairly frequently..(ah the frantic mad dashes to Canal street in hopes of not missing the 11:15 last bus)...but I also took alot of cabs...when i wasn't riding my bike.

When I realise that taking public transport is the only way to get somewhere, it puts the fear of god into me. I get butterflys in my stomach. And thats when I go with a family member! 8O
