Sounds like it was started by parents who hate having an autistic kid and what to put a stop to autism which has ruined their lives as they see it. Like kill autism now it's cramping my style. It's all about the parents. Probably mostly upper middle class to wealthy ones, who feel inconvenienced and embarrassed.

Could I ask what type of "hateful" things they say?

I know some are opposed to their talk of seeking a "cure" for autism, but aside from that I don't know much about them...except that John Robison disconnected himself from them.

Well, they produced the 'Autism Every Day' video, which is just nonstop hate. One of the highlights is when a mother, in front of her autistic daughter, talks about how she contemplated committing a murder-suicide with her autistic daughter, and decided not to because of her NT daughter.

they seem to forget that a large number of autistic kids can UNDERSTAND what people say. thats terrible.

It seems to me that Autism Speaks is primarily an organization to aid parents of children with classic autism.

It's not offensive to need help or relief.

Some of the strategies used to try to meet this goal are offensive.

If everyone could work together better, we could make some giant strides.

When I was little and nonverbal non responsive, they (not my parents) used to talk about me like I could not understand, and I could. idk, maybe that helped with the, 'he wont ever be able to do this and that'. Oh yeah? watch me.

It's amazing how many people hate us.

I think it's a misinterpretation of what's going on to think of these people as hating us.

Most of the support for Autism Speaks is from people who care about and sometimes for people with autism. Some of them may hate people with autism, but most of them are looking for a way to help and, because of their money, Autism Speaks is easy to find.

The fundraising propaganda put out by Autism Speaks is hateful, but that doesn't mean the many people who donate to it are hateful. They just haven't looked at it deeply enough and thought through the impact of the message they help fund.

Whenever I work with nonverbal kids, I always assume they can understand me unless proven otherwise. I'll often talk directly to them, even though they can't respond. And I don't talk down to them - I try to tell them things I think a typical kid their age might be interested in, in case they understand enough to be interested in that too.
