Oh and one other thought. My daughter tells me adults often act like kids are a different species and kids act like adults are a different species. So there is the teenager versus adult thing to deal with, too. She wishes adults recognized kids as having feelings and being people and vice versa. Just her observations. So I don't think Zombiebride that you're alone in this. A lot of people though may not be talking about this the way we are, and we at Wrong Planet aren't exactly typical.

As a child until teenage years I could not tell people away from objects, except for family as long as the context was the context at home, for example my brother I recognised as my brother I could construct Lego with, but in kindergarden as we were in the same group I could not recognize him as my brother anymore, as he merged in this context with the moving, noisy, coloured objects, which were the other children.
I still have difficulty to keep in mind, that people have own feelings and states of mind and inner life and that most people for example do not have special interests or for example enjoy socializing or have other perceptions in general.
I rely on what people tell me and what they tell me is a fact and I safe it in my memory.

Ditto. It even took me awhile as a kid to realize that I wasn't a different species from everyone else.

I've also had a bit of trouble recognizing that other people are individuals, too, with their own thoughts, feelings, and beliefs. What really bugs me, though, is when this happens the other way around. Some people just seem to have this odd preconceived notion that,"Hey, you're different! That must mean you don't have feelings!"

And I tend to get that pretty often.
