I once had a pair, they worked fairly well, but I also had to stick tissue in my ears to block out the electronic hiss.

the hiss is apparent due to the cancellation of much of the ambient low midrange, which makes the upper midrange seem louder.

Don't get those Bose active noise canceling headphones. They are the most worthless F***ing pile of $h!t out there and emit off a ultra high pitch noise that drives me nuts( I have high frequency hearing.). Absolutely not worth the $600 they cost. The best investment you can make is to go down to the sporting goods store and spend $11 on a good pair of shooters ear muffs.

SERIOUSLY.

Ugh I just bought the Bose Quiet Comforts, and they suuuuuuuck. They only partially block out the noise when you turn on the "noise canceling" switch, and you have to be actively using them for the outside sounds to be drowned out. I went and bought these on Amazon in addition to my new $350 headphones:

Seriously, a FOURTEENTH of the price of those crappy Bose headphones.

If you're going to spend money on good in-ear headphones though, get them and use the earmuffs over top of them, so the noise-canceling effect is maximized. Works like a charm.

For using with my phone and music, I splashed out on Atomic Floyd SuperDarts which are superb sound wise and very good at noise cancelling. Very expensive but very robust and I think they were worth it.

For sleeping I use "The Best Ear Plugs Period Moldable Reusable Blocks Out STOPS ALL Snoring Noise!" and is " a soft & mouldable ear plug is made from the purest beeswax, sterile cotton & finest lanolin. It forms to and seals your ear canal as you insert it, to create your own personal custom fit that blocks out FAR MORE SOUND than any other ear plug can!!" They are also waterproof if you like swimming.

I got them from ebay and are about US $15. They are brilliant, so comfortable when warmed up and I sleep far better when I wear them - well in terms of not being woken up by noise from passing vehicles or church bells etc. Stopping my head from keeping me awake is a different matter!

Those headphones give me a really hard time sometimes, man.
It appears that my hearing is more sensitive than any of my senses and I personally like to use small, classic headphones which you just plug them in your ears. Not the ones with the big butt, though. [I honestly couldn't find any term that suits this situation other than "butt". And hey, it actually sounds pretty cool.]
I think those classic headphones, since they don't cancel the noise, are better because they don't distract you with the hollow-ness of the song and you can actually hear the song.

That hiss would probably be an issue so. Why can't they just make earplugs that play music. Really that's what I am looking for. I don't like the big chunky headphones- I prefer in ear ones. I'll look and see if there any more discreet earmuffs. Thanks for the input

I can't remark on the sensory issues but I find even expensive noise cancelling headphones to be of poor quality and low in volume.

It's a tough choice between normal (non-in-ear) earphones and big bassy headphones for me.

The latter obviously sounds way better but is bigger, more difficult to hide, everybody hears all of it and is inviting to street thugs to tear it off your head and run away with it or strangle you with the wires.

The former is like harsh and thin sounding, wrecks your ears like nothing else could ever but doesn't have all of the cons of the headphones I mentioned above and therefore handy as hell.

Personally I use quite high-quality in ear earphones with foam tips. The feeling is comparable to earplugs and the noise blocking capabilities are almost as good.

The only requirement is that you really have to use foam tips (plastic or silicon flaps are not so bad for sound but they are not worth anything for isolation), find the right size for your ear, and use decent quality earphones.

If you are interested have a look at that geeky forum topic listing reviews for an insane number of IEM, listed by price.

I had a look at that thread and found it really helpful. Most of the the IEMs only had silicone tips but foam ones sound comfortable as well as being good for noise isolation so i'm gonna buy them separately. Thanks

I see that Amazon has a Black Friday deal for the Bose noise-cancelling headphones (earbuds), just $99:
