I can't believe these idiots actually came out with their own teddy bears at the Build-a-Bear shops, and my Talking Tom 2 has a free Autism Speaks T-shirt for Tom to wear, which I refuse to download. I guess they think any adult who buys themselves stuffed animals or play games on a tablet must be severely brain-damaged.

While I think it's messed up that your mother would say that to you, I can't blame someone for not wanting a child with full-blown autism if they're not able to handle it. I'm also not bothered by wanting to basically get rid of autism completely. From how my doctor describes it, my brain never fully developed. I have an incomplete brain. I believe I would function better if I were NT, but that's based on perspective.

I know my opinions are going to be unpopular, but I just wouldn't want anyone to go through the stuff I've gone through.

I feel that the world needs autism and it should not be gotten rid of at all. Sids should want Sids to be born.

Imo alot of the thinking about autism done by many people who are autistic and also people such as many if not all (I am not sure if all) of the parents and in Autism Speaks and also by psychologists and nts is based on a wrong or incomplete understanding of autism. If this is (even) true, which I believe it is, how are people who do not have much of an understanding or a wrong understanding going to be able to help other people who also have a wrong understanding have a right understanding???

A lot of this wrong understanding about autism is based on wrong understanding in general about oneself, other people, the world and on general wrong thinking in that many people do not know how to think comprehensively. This would include people from all categories--people including myself need to learn to think more comprehensively. If we start looking at the problem from this angle there would be much more of a possibility to help many more people and not just be treading water, holding grudges and all the other kinds of activities such as seeing the glass as half empty that come along with not processing data comprehensively.

I am not making a specific point about your Mother EMTkid, that would be inappropriate, but rather a wider statement about really crappy parents in general. I quoted you because what you posted got me riled up; I had similar things said about me and it resonated.

The thing that I don't understand with this approach is that if they are looking to establish a genetic link, then that being the case, the 'flaw' must surely therefore be with the parent and by extending their logic it must obviously then lead to the option of sterilisation of those parents to prevent the "genetic flaw" being passed on. Wonder how the supporters of A Speaks would feel about that? Maybe we should start a group to fund forcible sterilisations on men and women who may produce "disappointing" and troublesome children. I accept I am making a big leap here, but any parent that doesn't embrace the child they produce for who and what they are shouldn't be breeding anyway. I have no time for their eugenics movement tarted up as caring for poor souls.

Or that all autistic people are children. Because every child grows out of autism once they reach maturity. :/
By representing autism spectrum disorders with jigsaw pieces and spreading awareness through similar mediums, I think they're only perpetuating the myth that there's no autistic adults or that they have the mental age of small children. It's quite frustrating.

I'm getting sick of being represented by multicolored jigsaw puzzles -- a clusterf**k of a symbol if there ever was one.

I told my mum in an Email that I've sent her two days before New Year's Eve in 2012 that I don't wish to be cured of my AS and I need her to accept me the way I am.

On the other hand, I wonder who's going to gain up on me next, because I'm Pro-Life and they know I'm sensitive. :chin:

I also can't believe that the same TV station who brought us The Monkees in 1966 is now shoving Autism Speaks into our faces. My how times have changed.

i would say this is a big part of the problem: for example, when you hear people talking about "the sufferings of autistics" they usually mention social awkwardness and isolation--but they neglect to mention that not all autistic people desire a lot of social interaction, so a dearth of it in their lives is NOT felt as a depravation. some of us are perfectly happy being alone--but many autistics who DO desire social interaction but can't manage it, as well as NTs who can't function unless they're surrounded by 15 people at every waking moment, have trouble seeing this and so make the assumption that anyone who is alone MUST be suffering horribly.

Well, you can't discuss enough when it comes to genocide i guess. Is it right? Is it wrong? I mean, if they want to test children for autism before they are born, is that not what they are doing at a million things already (like Down Syndrome)? My opinion: i couldn't care less what people do or decide when they're pregnant. It's their body and their lives, people should be doing what they want to do. I don't care. I'm not against abortion. My opinion about how to live my life, with all my believes may differ from others. I don't mind, i think that's okay. So if people decide they don't want an autistic child, i think it's their own right to want that, and take actions, before a child is born. It's not my choice, i mean i don't see Autism not as a hard disorder or something. But i can respect those who do think different, i would not judge people on that.

I think that people have the right to say what they mean, and to want something, and arrange their lives as much as they want to. Even if it's unpopular. Wanting something or an unpopular opinion is not a felony. Acting on it is a different case ofcourse. I mean, there's a reason genocide is forbidden. Although i can understand some benefits from it, it's illegal, and i think it's a good thing it stays that way. Nobody wants a new holocaust. But i think that as long as there are people, i think this discussion stay's very difficult when it comes to ethical boundaries. Ofcourse they are subject by the time and culture we're living in. All i know is, is that i can't come up with a simple 'yes' or 'no' answer. It's too complicated for that. I think i'll be something in the middle of all that.

Yes, Autism Speaks can go F*ck themselves, but it's not necessarily any different from some other worthless charity.

I don't have any problem with pre-natal screening for autism. I don't have any problem with abortion generally, so it is illogical for me to oppose abortion of foetuses that turn out autistic.

Comparing them to the Nazi Party is really stupid. It may have escaped your attention, but the Nazis committed mass murder. Autism Speaks, for all their faults, do not advocating murdering autistic people, thank goodness. Though I guess any cure is vaguely comparable to death, you die and someone else waltzes away in your body...

Anyway, I dislike them, I think they do more harm for autistic people than good, and they divert money away from more deserving causes.

Not really. You can accept that people should have the right to abortion and that developing embryos and fetuses do not have any rights but still condemn practices that support the application of abortion to protected/minority groups such as sexes, sexual orientations and ethnic groups. This is the reason there's laws against sex-selective abortion and a large amount of controversy (even in pro-choice communities).

Isn't that nice of them. Yes, we should all thank Autism Speaks, for not advocating murdering us.

Actually forget that. Because indirectly they do advocate murdering autistic people. They just can't come right out and say it, but they do talk about it.

The central premise of Autism Speaks is ableist and anti-neurodiversity in nature. I support neurodiversity, and I'm against ableism, so therefore Autism Speaks can go take a flying f**k at a rolling donut.

Those are my sentiments, exactly. I also don't feel there's anything wrong with comparing Autism Speaks to the Nazi Party, but again I was never a bright light on WP. I've always been more of a drum head. Get it? Drum head?
