Asking pointless questions, is that how NTs get friends?

Can I also ask you - do you think NTs are generally consciously aware of themselves looking for things such as the word choice, intonation and body language, or do they usually pick on this without consciously realising that they are picking up on it?
I think it's situational. When somebody is in intense data gathering mode while simultaneously trying to manage what data they are giving off, it will be conscious. A first date is an example. Word choice, intonation and body language will be scrutinized closely both in real time and retroactively to decide if there should be a second date or not. In other situations it will be more automatic.
Some professions train a person to be conscious of it all then time rather than letting it just be done on automatic. Police need to be conscious of it especially, so they don't miss important clues when asking somebody questions. Actors also have to be conscious of it so they can properly portray a characyer's feelings with the appropriate body language and intonation (the script writers are in charge of word choice). There are probably other professions too. But a lot of the time NTs can just let it be automatic.
