What usually works for me is to not directly comment on what other's have said. Rather, I try to determine the underline topic of discussion, then see if I can formulate a sentence related to that topic that begins with the phrase: "My experience has been....". If I can not complete that sentence (i.e. I have no real-life personal experience on that subject) then I consider anything else I might say to be simply an opinion or self-indulgent advice-giving, and possibly best left unsaid.
