When I was in high school and college and doing an lot of math and physics, I listened to Bach to help me do the problems. Now I compose music as a hobby, so I don't listen to music while I'm doing that, and the other things I have to do for my work are so simple that I don't need to have music on. Anyway, I think that music helps doing mathematical problems

what do you think of the "Mozart effect"?

I use music to shut out more frustrating noises like when I'm at the store or anything. It helps prevent overload and it sort of acts like a stim for me when I wear my headphones. Although I strangely seem to mostly hate American voices. I go for Japanese singers, the men have softer voices I like. It's comfortable.

I sit front row in all of my engineering classes, with a headphone in one hear playing whatever music i feel like listening to at the time. I had a professor call me out during lecture thinking it was rude, but I replied it was to keep his words from going in one ear and coming out the other. They blend with the music this way and I grasp things better. I do all of my homework to music as well. Keeps my flow on track.

I can't concentrate on other things when listening to music either, or at least my concentration is much less efficient. I simply hate when someone insists on listening to music at work. It can be more irritating than co-workers talking around. I also can't do multitasking, e.g. listening to what is said in the office and concentrating on the work at hand. OK, to some degree I can, but it's more like directing attention back and forth.

directing attention back and forth is also a big toughie, it is like my hinge is very sticky and needs nuclear-powered WD-40.

Sometimes relatively simple electronic music engages my attention to at least approx. 60% so I find it difficult to concentrate on anything else (I'm writing this message listening to one, though... :) ):

I can't tolerate harsh-sounding electronic music, only mild, like this.

Directing attention back and forth when one is a task and the other is a conversation between others is not as difficult, but it requires a certain mood, a mental state which I seem to lack these days somehow, I don't know, maybe I spend too much time on WP... :)

My mind drifts when I listen to music and I have a hard time focusing on what I'm doing or the conversation I'm having when it's playing, although soft background music like at a restaurant is okay.

I like music...but I like quiet, too. I don't want to be in a situation where music is playing constantly. It would drive me crazy. I enjoy listening to the crickets at night.

I am not like that at all. I love silence. Usually I am already stressed of too much sensory overload and music only makes it worse.

I am more like that.

Also for those interested in music there is a research being done in music taste and autism in the music forum! It is really cool, check it out

I can read music, so I kinda imagine the actual notes dancing with the music.

absolutely--i find it much easier to concentrate if i listen to music while i draw or paint. i find it too distracting to listen to while writing, but it's just right for cultivating the focus i need for detailed drawing. i think the disparity happens because although both writing and drawing/painting are creative activities, when i'm drawing or painting i'm only using my visual cortex and spatial reasoning, but for writing i have to access my language centers as well and that takes much more--and a different sort of--concentration for me which the music interferes with.

For me, it all depends on the type of music and the situation. There are some situations where I can put on some music and be totally "in the zone", others where I can't focus on anything at all for the life of me, and I actually have to keep my music off to avoid being overloaded.
