I'm confused by the personal identity part....how do you write from your personal identity? I don't understand what that means. (Unless I'm overthinking it, and it just means that you write about yourself and your identity is part of that?)
I guess the better word I should have used would have been writing from my own personal experiences. Like I can only write from what I know and feel myself. My experiences. I can share what others have told me about their experiences and perspectives but I when I share about myself it's from mine. I guess that's the easiest way I can try to explain it. I hope that makes sense.

Probably a language habit. I always feel myself included when someone asks about aspies. i've been referred to as aspie many times in forums and never felt a need to correct anyone. but far as nicknames go, I like autie, better than aspie.

I think Autie is cute. For some reason it's difficult for me to say though. I get a little tongue tied when I say it sometimes. Aspie is easier for me to actually say. I guess it's the way the muscles move in my mouth when I say each word, Aspie is an easier movement for me. Sometimes if I try to say Autie it does not come out clearly.

It's a part of my personality. It's a part of who I am and it colours everything about me as an individual who sees the world in a different way. It's why I'm obsessed with Sweet Pea emoticons, especially live action ones like Peahawk.

I sometimes like:

'I'm Spectrum' :jester:

as shorthand for meaning I'm on the Autism Spectrum

I clicked other because I don't know why. It may have something to do with HFA and Aspies are more active here than the profoundly autistic? Maybe a diagnosis poll has been done here before or could be now? I did also notice this trend though. I try to stick to ASD because it obviously covers everything on the spectrum.

I absolutely agree with the OP. Somehow 'Aspie' and 'Asperger's' seem to define the spectrum not only here, elsewhere too. Sometimes autism or HFA is provisionally also included, but here it stops. Recently I was explicitely excluded from a survey because I didn't have AS or 'HFA', only the vague and undefinied PDD-NOS, while it was obvious that the survey was aimed at those with some form of HFA in general.

It is not true that the majority on the spectrum is dx'd with AS. About 50 % have a dx of PDD-NOS. In practice in most cases this dx is given at an early age when they can't decide which box to put it in. My unscientific guess is that in adulthood the dx of AS is preferred even when the evaluation is not enough thorough and/or there's not enough supporting evidence just because the sheer popularity/acknowledgement of the condition to such dx's like PDD-NOS (there's not only one dx that falls into this category), and it's generally not advisable to dx a relatively high functioning adult with autism either.

Because there was a thread a few weeks ago complaining about long OPs, so I try to shorten my posts as much as I can by not adding so many unnecessary words and just hope that people get the point. So instead of keep saying ''Aspies and Autistics....'', I just either say ''Aspies'' or ''Autistics'' as in everyone on the spectrum. We don't mean any disrespect.

I usually use aspie in my posts but that is because being aspie is my experience so I fear when I direct to auties I may be missing their experience far from the mark. I don't know so I feel I can't generalize you know? Talking about everyone in the spectrum is too ambitious.

This is why I agree with getting rid of the Aspergers diagnosis and just saying ASD.

My diagnosis just of a year ago says Autism Spectrum Disorder.

I assume it's directed at everyone.

I often use the term, "ASD". I am not so sure my diagnosis was the most precise anyway.

in own view theres a lot of reasons why this happens...
most WP members dont have direct experience of those of us on the low functioning spectrum so only think of us in stereotypes and feel they can only ever relate to people with aspergers/HFA.

many WP members are proud of their aspergers as part of their identity and think that if they associate it with more recognised disability it makes them look bad, they also tend to have a very negative understanding of what disability means.

many WP members are european and PDDNOS is almost non existant here as the ICD is the most commonly used diagnostic manual here not DSM,the ICD does not recognise PDDNOS.

a minority of people are aspie elitists and see those of us with classic autism as being inferior non functioning people and think we cant have skills/qualities so are disgusted to be put on the same spectrum as us.

some people on here only include aspergers in their target audience for their topics even when it isnt aspie specific- personaly stay away from these threads as it feels uncomfortable answering whilst giving the usual disclaimer as am not aspie and it feels like am not welcome to these threads.

As for the poll, probably it's all options at a point or another. I picked "Not realizing non-aspies might share similar experiences" because I feel it's the most relevant one.

KingdomOfRats you along with a few others I have mentioned are in my opinion the best contributors on this board.

Like I said I was diagnosed with ASD a few years ago it would have been Aspergers.

I have told my life sorry on these forums about being bullied and feeling like a was worthless.

I have no time for aspie elitists and I proudly pitch my tent in the Autism camp.

I have found many people here on the spectrum to be very nice and genuinely helpful.

I do not mean this as an insult to anybody but people on the spectrum are not cool to NT's that is why the site is called Wrong Planet.

Aspergers is Autism it runs in my extended family some have classic Autism some have Aspergers.

This section of the board is called General Autism Discussion and if you have Aspergers your Autistic you may not like that term but look at the board your posting on.

As far as most of the population is concerned we are all nuts anyway.

Autism or Aspergers take you pick because here is what the public thinks.
