Score! I will keep you in mind to ask questions in the future. :D I will just be starting in the Fall. Truthfully, I feel like I don't have enough knowledge about engineering (yet) to carry on a technical discussion, and yet I find myself with a lack of resources to ask people who have jobs in industry for advice and their experiences.

*bleh out* Go on with your regular discussion without bleh interrupting.

You're not interrupting.. this is what the thread is for isn't it? :)

What sort of engineering are you studying? and which big city or university campus is closest for you to get to? maybe I could give you some more specific tips or events to attend.

You can certainly never have too little knowledge to have a technical discussion.. in fact you sound like you've got the right mindset. You know there's lots you don't know, so you're ready to learn.

I felt like I was intruding too much into the realm of talking too much about my own experiences/interests when the OP has a dilemma! XD I'm starting in the fall at a community college, so I won't be taking actual engineering classes until I transfer to a university. However, I'm going to be studying electrical engineering and possibly software engineering.

I live in Los Angeles County. Specifically, I live near UCLA, UCI, UC Riverside, UC Santa Barbara, a lot of the Cal States including Cal Poly Pomona (which is where I want to transfer to), and also I live near Caltech and the University of Southern California. I know I will NEVER EVER be accepted into Caltech (lol), but I can imagine they have some networking events that are really good.

Binary, I laughed so hard at your scuba gear idea. :P I'm not very extroverted, but why is this networking event so bad for you?

:) Turn up with bandaged hands ("so sorry I can't shake hands with you, burnt myself cooking).

:) Cough a lot and say "please stand well away from me, in case you catch my cold"

:) wear dark glasses - they won't know whether you are making eye contact, ha! If challenged, say that your retinas are very sensitive to light. Ask them to get things for you (coffee, food).

:) if forced to actually converse, have a stock question ready: eg do you really enjoy networking? If they say yes, it's time to take your bathroom break.

:) Have an exit strategy: have to pick up the cat from the vet now, before they close.

And wear the wetsuit. Love it!

Electrical and/or software engineering... certainly lots of potential in those areas. Robotics, drones, embedded systems, sensors.. There's quite a big hobby scene in all this right now, not unlike the 70s and the early microcomputers. Have you checked out the Arduino programmable controller? I just looked on meetup and there's lots of Arduino and Maker type meetups in LA. They're not networking events as such, and even if the Arduino isn't your thing, they'll be full of the kinds of people who work as engineers in their day jobs, and most likely an Aspie or two amongst them. :) It would be worth going along to a few of these or other meetups on different topics, just to get the feel for them and to practice networking. They're almost always free, particularly for students.

Here's an example of the kind of thing that goes on, from a meetup group in Pasadena for example :-
----------------------------
Who are we?

We're an eclectic group formed by artists, engineers, developers, tinkerers, and hobbyists with a wide range of skills and interests who share a common curiosity about DIY projects involving Arduino and Hardware Electronics.

What sort of skill levels are involved?

We are a community open to everyone. From those who just want to get a general sense of the basic electronics, programming, and Arduino, to those with the technical savvy to pursue projects on their own. As such, we as a whole possess a wide range of skills and expertise. The aim of this meetup group is to try and come together in a way that is positive and beneficial to our members.

What activities are we organizing?

The list is open ended, as mentioned above we continuously seek to benefit our members, thus keep trying to figure out the best ways to do this. As of November '13, the list of activities include:

1 Monthly Meeting for Hands-On Demonstrations of Arduino Projects

2 Monthly Meetings for Show & Tell of Hardware Electronic Proje
cts
--------------------------

I'm sure the Universities have all kinds of events going on too, as you say. I don't know where they're advertised, but it would be worth phoning up the engineering departments of all the unis you mentioned and asking to be put on their mailing list for future events.

They don't have engineering classes at the community college?

Not really. What happens is I will get all of my lower level and support classes done at the CC, then transfer. These include general eds, Calculus 1, 2, and 3, Differential Equations, Linear Algebra, Physics 1, 2, and 3, Chemistry, and possibly some programming. Engineering classes require you to know a certain level of high math and physics before you are able to do them, so this makes sense.
