Literally Psychosis? I thought that diagnosis had largely fallen out of use?

I've read some superficial info about bipolar II disorder, anyone care to enlighten me?

Bipolar Disorders are mood disorders characterfized by periods of depression and elation(mania). These mood swings are not just normal mood swings that we experience in everyday life. The mood swings can last days, weeks, or months. They are often characterized by changes in thoughts, attitudes, behaviors, and physical well being.

Mania is whats known as the upswing of bipolar disorder and is charactarized by:
-Inflated self esteem, grandiosiity
-elated, overly dramatic, or irrtiabile mood
- Pressured speech, and racing thoughts (flights of ideas)
-Increased in goal directed activities; i.e always busy with something always on the go
-people in the mania often engage in risky behavior like spending money erraticially, indiscriminate sex, and excessive drug/alcohol use.

I'm sure we all know what depression is:
-Sadness; irrtiability
-Loss of interest in activities, loss of motivation
-appetite and sleep disturbance
-Psycomotor retardation
-preoccupational with guilt and worthlessness
-preoccupation with suicidie

With bipolar disorder, the mood swings can become so severe symptoms of psychosis such as delusions, hallucinations, and disturbing behavior can develop. The delusions and hallucinations are usually consistant with the mood. For example a depressed may hear derrgratory voices that ridicule and insult him/her, they may also develop the delusion they are being punished for sins commited in a past life. Someone in the midst of mania may develop delusions that they are some affliated with God.Some of the disturbing behavior that can occur with the mood episodes are with depression getting so bad that the patient evenutally goes into a stupor and becomes mute. (this is called catanoia). In mania the patient may have so much energy that speech may become hard to follow and incoherent, and behavior can become very unpredictable.

Sometimes mood symptoms mix together, and this called mixed mania, where you have a mix of mania and depression. ( i have experienced and have been hospitalized for this before, not fun ) :(

Ok to answer your question Bipolar II disorder is bipolar disorder with a milder version of mania called hypomania. Hypomania is never servere enough to warrant hospitalizations, or for symptoms of psychosis to develop. It usually charactarized by mostly depressions, with hypomania every now and then.

Ok enough my monologue, he he my speical interest is mental health.

Sparkplugloy, being gifted is considered a disorder? No wonder everyone at my school thinks our Gifted and Talented class is actually a different name for Special Education.

Well, if you include that I'm gifted as well as having AS, OCD, and supposed borderline schizophrenia.
