SAME HERE! I have done SO many things that "experts" have said were IMPOSSIBLE, that I myself have done or know how to do, that I literally CRINGE when someone calls me an expert, because I have lost ALL respect for the term!

I won't buy another memory book unless it tells me something new and worthwhile.

Apart from the usual memory techniques for names.eg for a Mr McDonald think of the person eating a burger, the other things I find helpful are

a) trying to take a genuine interest in whatever I want to remember
b) writing down as much as possible. Apart from keeping a diary,I also keep an alphabetical list of all the peoples' names that I've come into contact with at work and
socially (admittedly the 'social' list isn't very extensive !),as well as lists of songs/singers/
authors etc that I like.

There's a Chinese proverb that says a good memory is no substitute for a little ink
(or a computer in these modern times)

In regards to memory? Well, my memory overall is not as good as it once was as, I'm not chalking it up to being Autistic for, 6yrs ago I had suffered a coma mainly caused from heart trouble therefore, today both my short term & long term is greatly affect.Still, I do as best as I'm able to which mind you is not that bad from my very own standpoint and those around me. :)

If I might add memory is something that can get better or worse therefore, always try to learn techniques in helping yourself to cope with such scenarios as, I done in my own life.
