I enjoy a lot of music styles but the songs that relax me more are heavy, symphonic music.
I LOVE big orchestras with lots of voices singing together. The main bands that can put my brain in total relax mode are: Nightwish, Epica, Within Temptation, Red (This is Alt Rock, but have symphonic elements), After Forever and a lot of other bands following this style.

This thread is so interesting. I find it really cool how people are soothed but such different styles of music. Some of you are soothed but heavy music that would drive me nuts! Just goes to show how different we all are. That is really cool. :D

I like Gospel music. (I'm not religious in the sense that I go to Church every week, but I'm religious in the spiritual sense, in that I believe in God, etc.) I like it loud, with alot of bass. When I had my truck, I had an Elvis Presley gospel CD in the player, at ALL times, that just played continually. Also, I like gospel choirs. As for Classical music: I LOVE strings!! !

Depends on how bad I'm feeling; sometimes classic rock (60's-70's) helps, and sometimes environmental/meditation music (chimes, birds, running water, etc).

But Gregorian chant will pretty much always bring me to a calmer, more peaceful place.

Usually I listen to heavy metal and hard rock genres, post-hardcore occasionally. But sometimes when I'm stressed, I might listen to Weird Al too; his ridiculous songs almost always cheer me up

Anybody else find overwhelmingly fast, intricate, distorted or whatever music soothing?

I decompress by listening in surround sound, to a well-recorded atlantic ocean shore [ocean waves crashing upon the beach].

Honestly, if I'm experiencing sensory overload, I find music can actually make it much worse, even if it's music I enjoy. I love music, so this can pose a problem for me.

Now, for overcoming negative emotions, that's different. I find music can provide a nice, cathartic release, especially if it's aggressive and violent.

Same. For me it's heavy metal in German by Rammstein - I can't speak German but I'm kinda sorta teaching myself how to sing along with them.

Mein Herz Brennt and Ich Will are my two current favourites  Luv those aweome deep bass and drums!
