It's not very uncommon!

I do not seem to myself to be monotone, but others have told me that I am. Bloody! And I have worked so long on this issue.

Well, I think MY voice is FAR from monotone, but one person recently said I had a singsong voice(I never thought that, and singsong has always been the opposite of monotone as far as I am concerned, but dictionary.com says it DOES mean monotonous.) He also said I have a lilt!! Actually, I try to be expressive. I WILL tell you one thing though. SEVERAL people(I believe 3) practically had a conversation with me on the phone, and said they thoght I was an ANSWERING MACHINE! One wonders WHAT to believe!

I really AM curious though. I don't think I have EVER heard anyone normally speak monotone. Would any of you happen to be near boston?

Steve

this has been a comment on several of my teaching evals from college bio courses i've taught (both prior and after my awareness of AS ect)...

it really surprised me... considering my first teaching position in college was teaching science in elementary schools where i had to be very animated and such to teach **cough** entertain**cough** the kids.

speaking of evals... i get evaluated for this term this week and will see my results in a couple weeks after finals.

/cross fingers lol

There are also exercises to try to add more emotion to your voice.

Yeah I'm too old to improve. :)

How old are your nephews?

Young enough to read books to them? Reading aloud helps. :)

When I was a kid I loved it when my uncle read Field and Stream to me.

3 & 5 now. I have read a few books to them. I like the books like Dr Seuss that rhyme.

Maybe I'm being to hard on myself. Nobody ever said my voice was bad only too fast in the past. Though after reading the link Wiggerbeater posted I see how people maybe not be understanding me well.

I'd suggest you keep reading to them and try to put some animation in your voice.

I spoke little and quietly (as a kid - and so tend to). I also tend to speak fast, like I want to get it over with as fast as possible. If I have to think about what I'm saying I can have what seems to me to be long pauses, then if I don't watch it I can blurt out the following words very fast like I'm trying to catch up. It can give a staccato effect. I concentrate on slowing myself down when I am nervous. For me, getting involved in the debating group of a "young" branch of a political party helped. Very painful at the time, but it improved my speaking considerably.

I think reading to kids is helpful. You can overdo the voice animation and they still think its great. :)

(PS - my uncle didn't really read me Field and Stream. Actually I'm trying to remember if anyone ever read to me. I think they must have :?)

PPS - I remember being read Harry the Dirty Dog and Bascom (a hound dog). :)

yeah reading for kids is great!
i do it in class, with children that don't understand the language, it's all in the tension you create,
they love it.
