They both suck, and you should feel bad for thinking anyone should be called either of those.

In other words: you're a "ret*d".

That's the label that you're telling us that you want.

Why is that ?

If you really are an aspie then the option to be "free of a label" is impossible.

The only options are: (1) labels like "aspie", or "aspergian", of "HFA" on one hand, and (2) being labeled something like "ret*d", "weirdo", or "sicko", on the other.

SInce you are denouncing the first group of options then you are embracing the latter group of options. Its as simple as that. One or the other. You know full well that there is no third option.

So why do like being called (and calling others) "ret*d" and "sicko"?

A person is a 'ret*d' because they don't choose to label themselves and others as Aspie or Aspergian? Neither of these is an official term - they are what people *choose* to use. I happen to choose not to like either of them. I think people should be seen as a person first and the disability second. You wouldn't call someone with cerebral palsy a 'Palsian'. You would describe them as a person with cerebral palsy (I hope).
I don't care what other people choose to call themselves but I would prefer not to be labelled as a 'ret*d'.

Maybe I'm just confused here but I really don't believe that labels are necessarily bad. If people live by them, yeah, that's not healthy, but at the same time not everyone is going to affiliate "aspie" with "ret*d", especially when that person is familiar with the individual underneath. It seems like a lot of the problem here would be resolved if you refrain from using labels before someone understands who you are, and in many cases, divulging on the fact that you're an aspie isn't really necessary in these first critical encounters.

I would rather just call myself autistic (with the usual disclaimer of course that I am not diagnosed.)

Aspergian just sounds like we belong to the country of Aspergia.

Hmm...the country of Aspergia...the most ideal aspie paradise, or would our communication issues cause the country to collapse?

Imagine an NT crash landing in the country of Aspergia...nobody looks at his eyes, conversations are stiff, he is an outcast in an alien world.

There's a neat novel in this idea! :o A little mix of Logan's Run meets Omega-Man.

You can even have a quick-draw scene where the protagonist toasts a villain on the draw because the villain couldn't read his body language.

Use your brain.

"Autism/Autistic Spectrum Disorder" is generally the current medical label for this medical condition, though the following are still probably used:

"Asperger's Syndrome/Disorder"
"Autistic Disorder/Kanner's Autism"
"PDD-NOS"

Use the one you're diagnosed with. Or don't, but you sound like a moron using "aspie" or "Aspergian".

Even tho my autie traits haven't been diagnosed yet, I tend to say i'm aspergic ~ i know it's not a real word, but it sounds more like an adjective than a noun so it suits me just fine ...and it's alot better than the things many nt's and their cronies call me.

I don't like Aspergian, it doesn't sound right to me. I would prefer to say I am a person with Asperger's Disorder, as that is more accurate, but that's a lot of words. I like Aspie, it just sounds nicer than Aspergian, and it is easy to say. I don't see what is wrong with the name. What I do see is that there are a lot of people who are stupid and make unfair assumptions about people regardless of their label (or lack of a label). I seriously doubt using a more technically correct term will significantly affect others' view on it. They see what they want to see.

I've always disliked the word "Aspie" because it sounds as if we were trying to make AS sound "cool" or something. I kind of feel embarrassed when I see that word. I never use it or use it with "" to show that I don't seriously use that word.

"Aspergian" is a bit harder to say quickly but doesn't have that embarrassing feel.

So if I had to pick one of the two, I'd definitely choose "Aspergian". I wonder if there's any other word that's easy to say and that doesn't sound embarrassing (although I may be the only one that finds "Aspie" embarrassing).

"ASD Me" Just kidding.

There is no identity first name for Aspergers that is as smooth as "Autistic"
