let's just say that society stubbornly holds on in spite of its sociopathic leadership. it is like the fragrance of the violet which holds fast to the heels which crushed it.

Frankly that describes my current boss to a "T" and at least a few former employers of mine as well. It is frightening to think that many of this horrible characteristics might actually be that kind of qualities that help some people achieve and move up the ladder to success.

That's such a good point! The book Snakes in Suits is about sociopaths/psychopaths in professional positions. Because psychopaths superficially exude charm and personality, they can excel at interviews and reviews, using their manipulative knack. Then when they instigate problems (& they do!), those they hurt are too afraid to cross the sociopath. Sociopaths use others like pawns in their game and cheat the rules. In this way, sociopaths get away with bad behaviour, even elevating themselves to further power!

And I know, because I've met a sociopath. :cry:

While I shy away from labelling anyone as evil, sociopaths are the very definition of evil. Successful sociopaths are even scarier.

I know mentioning Sylvia browne is anathema to some here, but she said something that resonates with me- she calls sociopaths "dark spirits" and says that when they die they don't go to heaven, but spend time in outer darkness and then reincarnate through the "left door" into any available lifetime. she says they are not fixable, not even by god.

I don't know anyone who I think is a psychopath or on that spectrum, or maybe I am not good at spotting them, but I can't think of anyone who might be like that in my life.

I think I have been fortunate to have been around people who are probably nicer than average.

if you feel people are peeing on your leg yet they tell you it is only raining [IOW they are gaslighting you or doing ungood things to you yet telling you when you complain that you are overreacting or just imagining things]. if you can see they dig hurting people or animals or steal things from you or claim credit for your accomplishments, that is a sociopathic trait also.

In my experience, in addition to the above, the people I now suspect of p/s-pathy are people who act distracted when you share things that are important to you with them.

They'll act disinterested (e.g., twirl their drink and look down into it often, have a bland look bordering on a smirk on their face as if thinking, "yeah, whatever") and give the impression that nothing you share is important and will belittle whatever contribution you make to the conversation. Maybe they'll throw in some crumbs of praise to try to string you along or pull you into their world.

Chances of likelihood increase if all this is occurring in a room full of lawyers or military personnel.

The question I have is how to sort out whether I'm dealing with a true p/s-path, or someone who is just a plain old a$$h*#e.

I believe there is a gradient involved. on the spectrum from nice person to ahole, towards the distal end if it walks like a duckhole and quacks like a duckhole.....
