I am a happy Aspie so far. One never knows what tomorrow will bring, so I am aware of how suddenly situations can occur in our lives. I can say that I feel there are things I could be doing with my life that would make me happier career wise. When I was young, my dream was to own a theme park. But today, although I would still love to have an amusement park, I would be most happy earning a living by writing stories and playing music. Perhaps when I retire a few years, I can pursue that career path.
When I went to college and earned a degree in education, Asperger's had not yet found its diagnosis in the American psychology manuals. Although I knew there was something that was very different about me, I did not know what it was. I actually figured I must have been some sort of a one-of-a-kind psychological eccentricity.
While in college I pursued part time. The first place I tried was an ice cream and sandwich shop owned by a man that was friends with my family. After what I felt was a good interview, I was not hired. Why? He did not tell me. But I am glad that when I ran into him at the golf course one afternoon that he asked to join me. After six holes, I was playing even par and he was losing the match. And after picking up his ball on the sixth green, he said he had to go home, and he left.
The second place I tried I was hired immediately. It was an upscale century old family owned department store. It so happened I had two relatives working in the store. One was in record keeping and one was the buyer for the women's clothing. Therefore I had pull in getting hired there, and it was often stated that one had to know someone to get hired there.
After completing college, I was hired as a teacher in a school district where I had two relatives working in higher up positions. So although my credentials were excellent, I felt lucky in landing the position because of the possibility that my relatives influenced the school in hiring me. So as with my part time work, there is the strong possibility that knowing someone (relatives) helped in securing me employment.
