Oh, I feel like I have to reply to this as I recognize this scenario.
I do agree, the social pressure in fullfilling the expectations of the giver is truly not a nice one.
My family got used to my lack of obvious reactions like acting happy, so they know that if I thank them and say that it's a nice gift and/or something I could have needed, it's a honest reply. Maybe you should mention this to your closest people next time you get a gift? This can take a way a lot of the uncomfortable feelings once you get treated with understanding in that regard.
