Would taping black material to the windows work to black out the light? This is not my own house so I can't really install blackout blinds.

If you can't afford a weighted blanket can you make up your bed with several layers of blankets and tuck the blankets tightly into the bed? Then go head first into the bed so your head is in the foot end of the bed. Make sure you have a breathing passage at the end of the bed so you don't suffocate.
Also do your windows have heavy drapes to cut out most of the light?

That's a good idea re the blankets.

My curtains are not very thick and let some sunlight through.
