What a lot of us do is look at peoples nose or mouth. That does seem to fool people into thinking we are looking them in the eye. The difficult part is how long to look at them. If we look at them for too short a period of time they think we are disinterested. If we look at them for too short a period of time they think we are creepy.

As for raccoons I found this Facebook Page dedicated to them
