I self-diagnose as a fruit. Looking forward to debating whether nuts are fruits.
You can argue that the question is one for biologists to decide. But imagine nuts and fruits like us – with brains, thoughts, and perceptions, nuts and fruits that can write and talk. The biologist will see commonalities and variabilities from her external perspective, whilst we will see commonalities and variabilities from our perspective.
Not long ago homosexuality was considered dysfunctional. Was progress made on that issue by leaving all decisions to the so-called experts?
To be sure, an external perspective can deliver valuable insights, but mainly in terms of identifying commonalities that elude nuts and fruits like us because we assume they apply to all parts of plants, and hardly in terms of identifying differences that set us apart.
In short, if you and I are satisfied that at some level of abstraction the differences between us are smaller than the differences between either of us and say a root, do we care whether a root thinks we are of the same category or not?
Yes, some roots have PhDs relating to aspects of nuts and fruits, but similarly some nuts and fruits have PhDs in aspects relating to roots.
I guess we'll probably need a root to decide whether fruits are allowed to have discussions with nuts
