enough about tupperware.

You went to a psychiatrist for a specific reason. Make sure she knows what you want from her. Ask her to tell you how she is going to achieve that goal. Is she does not have a plan tell her that is not good enough and that you will see someone else then.

Doctor work for you. They can give you advice and you can refuse to take it. But how about you telling her what you want?

Hamster--

Who diagnosed your daughter? I was wondering if they could diagnose you or refer you to someone who can.

Everything people have posted I can relate to. The reaction to grief, the insomnia, etc.

Good luck with this, Hamster. By the way, love your avi. It looks like how I feel sometimes.

TUPPERWARE! 8O

That was especially for you, M02.

Anyway, you are 100% correct, and I am definitely going into our next appointment with both guns blazing. I've spent most of our sessions sitting there like a dorky lump, and it's time I became my own advocate, like I did with my daughter.

Speaking of which, Rjaye, my girl was initially dx'd by the school psychologist (he's an angel on earth), went through the diagnostic testing, then she saw a child psychiatrist, who was nice but a total waste of time, although the anti-anxiety meds he prescribed did help my girl through a rough period when she was wailing like a fire engine all night...Soon as I felt she no longer needed them, however, I had him take her off them, then eventually stopped the sessions. She's receiving special ed services, and is doing wonderfully.

Oh, and glad you like my zombie hamster! It looks like how I LOOK sometimes.

My experience with shrinks is the same. The one who diagnosed me seemed to do a reasonably competent job of that; and he diagnosed me quite quickly. But as for going to a psychiatrist or psychologist for treatment - FORGET IT! Their advice is about as profound as a desk calendar. "Tell yourself - every day in every way, you are getting better and better". That sort of garbage. They are good for people with no real problems - generally happy people who are just feeling down in the dumps for a bit, but for people with genuine mental disorders, forget it. We are still in the 'blood letting' age when it comes to treating disorders of the mind.

UPDATE:

Well, I fired her yesterday.

For anyone who's interested, a nasty little rant on the subject here.

Good for you, Hamster. I was diagnosed by a Child and Adolescent Developmental Psychologist. He was actually my son's, but we got a 2 for 1.

When you ask to be tested for AS, you should be given a full diagnostic assessment immediately, and only after that do you need to consider any further therapy options. Also, make sure you research what available diagnostic tests have been designed specifically for testing for AS, and discuss with your prospective professional what specific tests will be performed on you to reach their diagnosis. These are two considerations I can suggest, good luck, it should be a postive and liberating experience to finally get properly tested and diagnosed.

Glad you fired her. Since the DSM and every other diagnostic guide in existence says that you must be of normal or above intelligence to be diagnosed with AS, I have to wonder, has she even looked at the (1 page) diagnostic criteria?

Good riddance!

Exactly, Geek. I had a bad feeling about her right from the get-go, but because my primary doctor had referred me to her, I went along with it. Which was dopey of me.

Thanks for your comments and support, everyone! This place is my respite from a world full of idiots.

ZanneMarie, that made me laugh. :D

Unfortunately that doesn't work with the majority of shrinks and therapists, who have no expertise and experience with ASDs, especially not in adults. It seems unfair of a shrink who doesn't have the experience with adult ASDs to take on a client knowing the client is seeking a diagnosis, and to string them along like this though :(

There is nothing in the DSM-IV criteria that says about average to above average intelligence. What I see is no speech delay, no delay in cognitive development, self-help skills, adaptive behavior, and the curiosity in childhood environment. And the last part is the criteria isn’t met for another PDD and schizophrenia.

If you have to have average or above average intelligence to have the AS diagnoses, then why isn’t it in the criteria? Perhaps it will be when the mental disorders criterias get recreated again.
