Get this, though. Adult assessments are not covered under Medicare and we have to pay out of pocket for them. They aren't a couple hundred dollars, either. Mine was $700 which was the lower end of the price range. Another quoted me nearly $1500. I'm a single mum on a carer payment, too, so it was no easy feat getting that money together. Thank goodness for the help of friends on that count.

That's why, unless it is of immediate benefit to someone, that obtaining an adult diagnosis of Asperger's is not practical.

It's one of the things I'm hoping to work on showcasing in grad school, at least for Australia.

I went for years without a dx because of it, and only managed to get a dx because a friend helped cover half of it. I can't access any psychological assistance to deal with the diagnosis, or therapy to help me cope with it, either, because it costs too much for me to see specialists. I already have a debilitating health condition that takes a lot of my income, and mental health isn't a concern here despite all the lip service they pay to it.

It's very frustrating. I do believe we should all be able to access diagnoses, and I think the psychs who believe charging $700 for four hours work is appropriate are reprehensible.
