would it help to have a class for social skills?

depends on the type of class - I intelectually know how to socialise but can't perform. Some sort of coaching might help, but book-learning would be of little use.

Same here. They do have this befriending scheme in the NAS in some regions I think, and some of these can do a coaching-like thing.
