Of course, it is a spectrum. One can have traits, but not in such a degree that it makes a qualitative impairment in life, then it is nothing but traits and the differences may improve substantially. If you had a proper dx from a developmental psychologist, which requires a lot of time with a full scale IQ test and other tests, then believe it because developmental psychs are specialists in developmental problems. If it was a quickie exam by a medical doctor, then get a real evealuation by a Ph.D developmental psychologist.

From the experience with myself and my 2 children (both dx'ed), talking about friends and being excited about them never happened. Playing together may happen, but it is usually out of sight and out of mind. She may have a pragmatic speech problem and be a bit delayed socially, but is it impairing her quality of life?

I have always noticed that people on the spectrum, even in pictures, hold their hands in a distorted way, sort of clawed/ hook shaped. It's one thing I'm self conscious about myself and I always hide my hands in pictures if I can, though it's not that pronounced in me. Does she contort her hands other than doing this rubbing thing? Do they ever not really look properly "at rest?.

Huh, I have the same trait. When I'm using the touchpad on my notebook, just my index finges and thumbs extend and all the others are tucked away. I even sleep like that. I also have hyperextensible fingers.

I think you should seek out a second opinion, the earlier AS is detected the better. Does she have problems regulating her emotions, any angry outbursts?
