Sensory Deprivation Tank
I love floating ! I have a monthly subscription at my local float centre. It does me a lot of good. I've got my monthly session tomorrow evening and I can't wait until then.
To me, It's just great. First, it's the polar opposite of sensory or social overload. You are alone. No noise. No lights. No demands. You don't even have to stand, or sit, or lie, or be in any specific position; the Epsom salt solution supports you, in a perfect way no bed will ever come close to, letting yourself relax every muscle.
Second, it's basically a powerful help to meditation. In that sense it is nothing revolutionary or new ; apart from the purely physical effects floating won't lead you anywhere meditation wouldn't have eventually led you. But it's easier, quicker (yes, like the Dark Side ^^) and allow you to reach deep meditative states with little experience.
Claustrophobia is not a huge issue. You can just float with the pod open, that's what most people who identify as claustrophobic do in the beginning, it's not as immersive but it is certainly a nice experience nonetheless. And from what I read, even claustrophobic people feel OK with closing the pod after one or two sessions. Remember: you are not imprisoned, you close the pod, you open the pod, you and only you have complete control over it, you can push the lid and walk away any time you want. I don't really know how to explain it, but it absolutely does not feel like being confined, more the opposite.
Please feel free to contact me about it; I love floating and writing about it and will be happy to share my experience.
