Despite being hyperlexic, I cannot do both at the same time. Not well, anyway. I also have a hard time taking notes - i.e. listening and writing at the same time. I read my notes the next day and it's like somebody else wrote them because I have no aural memory of hearing the lecture.

aylissa, I have that same trouble! I had a class in high school that was all lecture and did terribly, even though I really liked the teacher and he was a very good speaker. It sounded easy but when I took the notes home, I didn't understand them.

To the poll, I can't write and listen/talk but I can type and talk. We were trained to type and look away and I find that I type more accurately and faster if I don't look at the keyboard or monitor.

no, I mean saying something other than what you are writing.

I am especially curious as my son who I think has some traits can do this but I cannot. I try, but (apart from reading what I am writing) if I speak, I have to stop writing.

Then I started wondering whether this is an AS trait (not seen it listed) or whether its on an AS Dx test :?

No, because I tend to write the exact word I'm currently saying, or placing incorrect characters on the sheet of paper, again based on what I say. It actually leads to some funny results...

I can write while I sing or repeat what I'm writting. But I can't hold a conversation at the same time I'm writting.

No, I only can do just one thing at a time and in one specific order, I get lost sometimes when I get distracted or have to do another task. Is that an AS thing or another problem like dyslexia or something similar, or both?

I can't even listen and write at the same time :P

I can do it. I have talked on the phone and written because I had to write down addresses and write down information of what I'm supposed to say. But I'm mostly listening as I'm writing. It's usually me writing down notes for myself someone is giving me. But I never have actually talked as I was writing. But I've said "Okay" as I write something down.

I can't talk and write at the same time... I'll end up writing a word I said or saying a word I wrote... but I can draw and talk at the same time.

I can't. Also I can't photocopy while somebody is talking, which makes me look like a real moron at work.

No, very one track mind. I can process a ton of one thing, but a daub of something ese stops the machine, then I have to reboot and start over.

I always end up writing down words that I've said instead of writing what I'm supposed to.
Then again, that happens when I think/daydream while writing too. I write the words I was thinking about.
