When I first started using forums and instant messengers years ago I found smiley faces and emoticons pretty confusing until I started recognizing them over time.

Some of this forum's smilies confuse me. When I scroll over them, the description doesn't match the expression I see.

 doesn't look like eye-rolling to me, it looks like shame or sheepishness.

:? looks like how someone would feel about something she was about to roll her eyes at; a mixture of slight irritation and slight confusion. A look that says "that's dumb." It's supposed to be "confused."

 looks like strong sadness or hopelessness, not embarrassment.

I agree with you on the first one , I have no idea what the 2nd one looks like , but the third one says embarrassment to me but could also be physically straining yourself sitting on the throne :P .

I just had a thought that may provide some insight into why this didn't look like embarrassment to me: Only people with light-colored skin turn pinkish or red when they are embarrassed. I did not grow up around people with light skin, so I have little reason to automatically associate blushing with embarrassment. I associate unusual redness with injury.

I started this thread over a year ago, and I think I saw that face as sad because of the shape of the eyes and mouth. I don't think I considered the color.
