Being social is hard enough without all these new phrases and rules.

Yeah tumblr in general just weirds me out. What happened to just being straight, gay, bi or asexual? 8O They seem to have created thousands of sexualities and... romantics? So there is bisexual and... biromantic? And also all the otherkins and thousands of gender identities 8O Tumblr confuses the hell out of me.

Good point. While it's true that sexuality is a complex matter that changes as we get older, and we should avoid putting people into neat categories, the trend on Tumblr is just people trying to be 'unique'. They forget that all living creatures are already unique.

I wonder if anyone would have imagined tumblr becoming what it is at the beginning of tumblr?
Was there the idea of otherkin prior to tumblr?
I think trigger warnings are ridiculous.

Otherkin have existed for a while. I first learned about them in 2002, when there was one in my math class. I guess he picked up the fact that I was... "weird"?? and suggested I look into it. It was all very hush hush though, like a secret club. They have been around for a while, and after studying them, I did understand how they could come to the idea they were some sort of fae creature, a changeling child. I've always felt like an outsider, like I didn't belong here, only recently did I realize it was because I am on the autism spectrum.
(there are two types, or were I should say, of Otherkin. Those who believe they are changeling children, and those who believe they were fae in a past life)
Now, though, it's just gotten flat out ridiculous...

Swag: Wikipedia - Swag

I thought it meant something closer to the first definition (semi-synonymous with what is sometimes called "bling"...oh, oops, that just perpetuates the problem :D ).

I see acronyms (such as "smh") and still have to look them up....

"Hashtag" anything (though I admit to using it as sparingly as possible when absolutely necessary).

"Meme," "selfie" (for years, I thought it meant a photo image of something altogether different "why the hack would anyone post an image of THAT?!?"), "racist" (to describe anything which the individual using the term believes is repugnant regardless of any racial context), "digits" and being "down" with anything (it is being used in cholesterol-drug television advertisements, stop it already).

And, among some classic terms: "could care less" (when the phrase is actually "couldn't care less").

Diva originally meant "goddess". For years a woman famous for her beauty and talent in acting or singing would be described as a diva, which was meant to be positive. But more recently it is often used negatively, possibly as a milder version of the "B" word. This has bothered me a lot for some reason.

Just the other day on Wiki I read about "bling" or "bling bling", meaning wearing or covered in flashy, sparkly jewelry, and learned the word is (possibly) used to describe the sounds the jewelry makes. Interesting.

I still don't know all the acronyms I read online. This is embarrassing, but I have no clue what FTW stands for.
For The Win, maybe? I also don't get it when youngsters say "sick" to mean something is good. To me, "sick" either means "ill", or something that is NOT good, or really disgusting.

I dunno, every generation makes English sound like a foreign language. Like, when I was a little dudette everything was like, totally rad, okay?

Yep, FTW most often means "for the win". It can sometimes, but rarely, mean "f**k the world".

Sick means the same as "rad" did. I haven't heard anyone use it in years. Those type of words don't last very long. Same with "wicked". All have the same meaning - "cool" or "neat".

I just skip over the newspeak. If I must, as in someone close to me insists its critical I know this or that for interpretation, I Google them.

Otherwise, I'm not good at figuring them out. And that increases anxiety.

A site very popular among (mainly) teenage girls. It's sort of... blogging I guess? Never used it.

I was just thinking that, and I was also thinking that I object to it as a name for (I guess) a website, on the grounds that it's such an unhelpful name. Good names and (new) words are ones that give an indication what they mean, e.g. "newspeak," "compassion fatigue." Even "Facebook" gives people some hint about what it is, but "tumblr" isn't even a proper word.

For me, Swag is what a burglar steals, and they have no right to recycle the term.

"Selfie" - I just wish they weren't too lazy to type "self-portrait." See what I mean? Sticking to language that doesn't force the audience to go running to a dictionary of ultra-modern slang every ten seconds is a kind, inclusive thing to do.

Spoken like someone whose sexual and romantic orientations overlap ;) tumblr (mostly) didn't pull this stuff out of thin air. Although individuals have pulled things out of thin air in the past.

Eh, I think complaining when they're not included is a bit silly, and putting trigger warnings for things that are clearly in the title (e.g. "TW: rape" in an article called "rape is too common") insults the intelligence of your userbase, but generally I don't think they're a bad idea. If some people can't take thinking about something when they're in a certain mood then I'd rather they didn't get unnecessarily upset (and certainly not PTSD triggers). Avoiding being upset at any point is not a good idea though.

Top kek, epic banter, #yolo #swag #2k12+3 #bantz

Will happily explain any of those phrases if anyone is confused. I have a friend who is constantly pulling neologisms from obscure corners of the internet and it's really entertaining.
