Diagnosed at 23 with AS.

I knew I was different as far back as preschool. It was a huge relief to realize I'm not some sort of freak.

As long as we are doing this. I knew I was different at least by 6. I really didn't have enough experience with others to know much earlier. 6 was ALSO when I was checked out, because my school said I wasn't interacting with other kids. Things were inconclusive, and I was apparently later diagnosed ADHD. That was around 1969, so Autism and AS weren't diagnosis' at that point. I was somewhat sure of my being AS I guess by 42, and I guess finally figured that I MUST be by like 43, which was like 6 months ago.

BTW Interesting "factoid"! Some say as many as 30% of those diagnosed ADD/ADHD are on the Autistic Spectrum!

this is the kind of thing i would like to prevent Steve... :(

do you think you were given less of a chance because you were miss-DXed with something like ADHD?

Well, it looks like the ridalin MIGHT have helped. We'll never know, because I wasn't given it. I wasn't "hyperactive". If I could have known about AS, it would have been GREAT! Just the knowledge would have been a help.

Self-diagnosed at 40, confirmed dx when I was 42. Wish I'd known then what I know now...

Coping skills? I have none. I'm just now learning that my tendency to internalize everything and cocoon in my room and stop talking for a while are the symptoms of a meltdown, and that I actually have them fairly frequently. So at the age of 43 I realize that when I get that itchy feeling in my scalp, that it's the sign of imminent meltdown, and that I need to remove myself from the environs immediately and stuff my ears with earplugs and get in bed under the covers with a good book. For at least a day if I'm really upset. That's my new way of coping with the world - and I feel as if I'm acting like a 3 year-old.
