Silence definitely helps me too...I often have to wear earplugs.[/quote]

Yeah, I don't do that but sometimes I cover my ears with my hands, especially when the teacher asks a student to read a passage out loud because I often read and process the information at a different speed than does the student reading it so that helps me but it seems to depend on the situation because sometimes it's not an issue though when it is that is what I do.

SamuraiSaxen is right! With ME, if I read a book I LIKE, it almost comes ALIVE! It is actually better than a movie! If I read a book I DON'T like, my mind can go in all sorts of tangents. Of course, I CAN force myself on track, and I can now read at like 4 different speeds. The highest speed is just good for getting the gist, and the slowest is one that can end up pretty much like a movie, but is generally too slow for something I don't like. 8-(

BTW it took a little while because I got too use to reading english. In such a case, it is almost like I am dictating to myself. I don't actually physically say anything, but I interpret the internal audio, as opposed to the written word. If I just read the written word, I wouldn't have comprehension. I guess a LOT of people have that problem because it is a well known fact that that is the biggest impediment to speed reading. Ironic, since I was reading for several years before I did that. I also never really developed that habit with foreign languages. Anyway, I finally got over that.

Yes, I do that sometimes, usually when a book goes on about the same old subject for 5+ pages. I am a very daydreamy person

Yeah some books I just have to give up on. Rambling, overly descriptive writing can be near impossible for me to read. But it does depend on the style. Someone like Will Self can ramble on and be ludicrously over-descriptive and it's really engaging because of the way he puts words together.

I have to try hard to concentrate too, but once I get going without fear of interruption, I go deep. The difficulty is getting to that point in the first place and I have considered an ADD problem, but really, I just don't want to have anything else 'wrong' with me :(

my problem is that my thoughts are louder than the words on the paper...and i can't shut them off..if fact I sometimes need a little outside stimulus while I am reading..to drown out my thoughts..so i used to go to places that were kinda noisy and active to read books.
