Not aware of any non-verbal or partially verbal autistic people tripping over themselves to be associated with Aspies? Come to think of it my autistic daughter has no interest in being anyone except herself. Tell your friend social conformity is a silly primitive concept.

Cyberdad?

That guy is NO friend of mine.

I was being polite above, but from the stuff he said, he came across as possibly delusional. Still, I'm no doctor, so I wanted to be respectful to at least some extent.

That didn't last long. :D

Delusional yes...

Does the name "Bernie the Brain" mean anything to you?

You seem to have both Aspie and neurotypical traits

What would these results mean? Been told here I must be a "half pint".

That is why I have stopped using the term "HFAutistic" to describe myself...
I simply say I have mild autism...

No, no, we still exist just fine. It's only been simplified so that it's all the same name now. If you had a diagnosis of PDD-NOS, Asperger's, Autistic Disorder, Childhood Disintegrative Disorder beforehand, they have combined those into Autism Spectrum Disorder. (Rett syndrome stayed its own category because it's due to a known genetic mutation.)

I hate the politics stuff, too, and I think we all need to stick together whether our autism is mild or severe or uncategorizable. Fact is, appearances aside, the people who need a lot of help, and the people who only need a little help, actually have a whole lot in common. The same traits appear in both groups and many of the same problems face both groups. And unity helps both because if they divide us into groups, it's divide-and-conquer with the "high functioning" people too afraid of the disability label to stand up for the rights of "low functioning" people, and the "low functioning" people being encouraged to reject the "high functioning" people as not truly needing any help at all and intruding on their "territory". When the conflict is between sub-groups like this, the people and the system that is hurting all of us tend to get away with it.

I agree with this, the politics is very strange; quite divisive and unhelpful.

I'm not convinced the two things are entirely different.. I think someone diagnosed with HFA or "mild autism" probably presents (to the average Joe) in much the same way as someone diagnosed with Asperger's.

DSM is not the final authority of all things autistic or even mental health related. Plenty of clinicians use other diagnostic criteria and hold different opinions, especially outside of the USA. I was diagnosed this year, the report says
Autistic Spectrum Disorder, specifically Asperger's Syndrome.

I'm comfortable with identifying to the Asperger's label even if some now think it is not valid. In my opinion saying I have Asperger's means more to average people than saying HFA or 'mild autism' and then having to explain the meaning behind that.

Certainly for people diagnosed late on getting involved in arguments about the diagnostic criteria and technicalities like language delay is just a waste of time. Perhaps the difference in the diagnosis matters more for children where the support services available may be determined purely by the specific label that has been applied.

I'm not aware of any medical/scientific facts that support his ideas, are you? Especially about brain structure?

He is right (about A.S. being different from autism, not about being superior).

http://www.biomedcentral.com/content/pd ... 11-175.pdf is an article about research that seems to back this up.
