Be warned there is some weird social politics around the issue. Some parents want the more "HF" folk to STFU ("my kid is completely different from you so I'm not going to listen to anything you say") and some "HF" types have delusions of grandeur or for other reasons don't want to be associated with "ret*ds." The founder of GRASP is one example of the latter.
I agree with this, the politics is very strange; quite divisive and unhelpful.
I'm not convinced the two things are entirely different.. I think someone diagnosed with HFA or "mild autism" probably presents (to the average Joe) in much the same way as someone diagnosed with Asperger's.
DSM is not the final authority of all things autistic or even mental health related. Plenty of clinicians use other diagnostic criteria and hold different opinions, especially outside of the USA. I was diagnosed this year, the report says
Autistic Spectrum Disorder, specifically Asperger's Syndrome.
I'm comfortable with identifying to the Asperger's label even if some now think it is not valid. In my opinion saying I have Asperger's means more to average people than saying HFA or 'mild autism' and then having to explain the meaning behind that.
Certainly for people diagnosed late on getting involved in arguments about the diagnostic criteria and technicalities like language delay is just a waste of time. Perhaps the difference in the diagnosis matters more for children where the support services available may be determined purely by the specific label that has been applied.
