Its a reference to my ex girlfriend - she's one of those people who confronts life's problems by claiming to have one disability or another. However, she refused to get any of them diagnosed... her attitude was belittling to real aspies, belive me. So yeah, it's not an attempt at saying I don't think NTs should post here or anything. It's just me being a git :D

I'm generally not a fan of the kind of people who seem to claim to have AS when they show absolutely no signs of it... it really annoys me. And the internet is full of people like that... look at any forum outside of WP, I swear 50% of the internet claims to have Aspergers :P

Even though I am not diagnosed (and actually refused to believe there was anything off for a while until I couldn't do it anymore) I know what you are talking about...after being dxed with OCD I told two friends at school who suddenly insisted they had OCD as well and after eating lunch together they would both insist that they felt dirty and needed to wash their hands. I know they honestly believed they had OCD (for the remainder of the week at least) but it was borderline mocking.

Back to food. I totally do this. But it's what's easiest, rather than any real taste for the garbage that I eat. I just figure what is the best thing that I can get easily, and stick with it, day in and day out. I'm really sick of it, and it's not healthy. I used to cook, but I just can't be bothered for only me.

I have these phases too, and I'm always surprised by their sudden onsets and disappearances ;)

Amongst the phases were:

+ Kiwi fruit. I would eat several every day, without fail. It was something about the taste which I couldn't get enough - it's sweet with a touch of sourness. One day, I found myself disliking kiwi fruits, and now I can barely stand to see them. I find the very sight of them repulsive, for some reason.

+ Museli bars. I would easily devour half a box of bars a day for over a month. The pantry was filled with boxes of museli bars. My favourite were the apricot bars. I also can't stand the sight of them now :)

There's more, but those two phases really struck me.

Also, whenever I go to a Japanese restaurant, I will only eat three types of dishes: grilled eel, raw salmon, raw tuna.

I've done this for years! I go through some funny phases. I remember for several months about 10 years ago I just had to have two bottles of ready-mixed margarita and two packets of cheesey Wotsits every day.

Hi,

I've been doing this pretty much all my life - I'm so glad that you mentioned it because I thought it was yet another thing that was 'just me being weird' and it's really great to know that so many people eat in the same way - I feel very reassured that I am not weird (well, not too much  ).

As for whether or not it's a trait of AS - it would certainly fit in with the enjoyment of routines, and in some cases, with sensory processing issues as if one (such as myself) has above average sensitivity to texture, taste and smell, it can be very difficult to adjust to eating different things everyday and can actually be quite overwhelming.

I also find that I don't like what I call 'complicated' food. i.e. I don't like to have multiple foods at one meal and I don't like things that have a huge range and combination of flavours and textures - it is just too much for me to take and can make me feel confused and have a headache and can even trigger sensory overload meltdowns. Does anyone else experience this?

My favourite right now is pink salmon paste. It's good with bread. Also I drink pear juice, I've tried other juices but never liked them.

I know how you feel. I am not diagnosed, but I STILL see things like that seemingly perfectly normal guy that recently showed symptoms of normal male life, and asked if he was AS! Or the other person that obviously had OTHER problems.

As for me? I don't really know how much I might seem to have AS. With me, I have an aversion of, and hatred of being, touched. I always have. I don't really know why. My eyes feel almost like they are a different magnetic pole than others. They just can't look for long. Again, always have, don't really know why. I look down when I walk. I may talk tangetially or in depth. Yesterday, in a meeting, like usual, I was SILENT! I take the path of least resistance which is often NOT the shortest path. I could list lots of other symptoms, but these are some of the more obvious ones people may notice. If you met me on the street, you might think *I* was normal.

Maybe you don't want to throw the good out with the bad. GTFO IS a bit harsh.

Steve

I used to do this, but my husband won't let me do it now and since he cooks, he gets the say about it.

I started that when I was a kid. That was also one of the big ah ha moments for me with AS. I never would have thought that was associated to anything, but that was me all the way. The only other thing I did was constantly forget to eat when I was writing or involved in finding out everything about an interest. I'm also bad with that, even now.

Food is kind of strange to me. I find it a nuisance and I'm not sure why we can't just have something like the old space sticks to sustain us. I never did understand the fascination with food.

Having to eat is a real pain sometimes isn't it? I get really annoyed with my stomach sometimes for disturbing me!

Someone once said I eat to live rather than live to eat. I can't stand roast dinners. I just want something simple. I wish I could have a pepperoni pizza for dinner every day.
For sandwiches the only thing I'll ever have in it is peanut butter. And I have this unusual habit of having a bowl of cereal just before I go to sleep-You could call it Nightfast or something :)
